If you have an older model bulky Playstation 2 system that has disk read errors coupled with a strange grinding noise, we made this video to show you one possible solution. I bought this PS2 broken, fixed it almost a year ago and it's still functioning perfectly. It may not fix all disk errors, but if your PS2 has a strange grinding noise going on with DRE's, this may get you going again before you toss it out.

  • Additional help.

As an experienced repair tech, I can tell you this is a great idea.
The only thing I would do different is not use clipper oil.
This may be petrolium based and will eat plastics that are part of the movment.
The sled gear appears to be metal as do the slides, but there might be plastic that slides around those.
You will want to use white lithium grease like http://www.plasticservices.com/MoldingAcces/whtgrease.htm . Remember to never use petrolium based products with plastic, just like never using vaseline with condoms.
While you have it opened Spray a small amount of windex on a Q-tip and gently clean the lens.
If you spot any hair, dust fibers around those gears, you will have to pick those out first.
The only other thing is if the door is belt driven, and you have been having problems with it, get some belt dressing or rubber rejuvinator and fix that while you have it open.

    • Lube

Instead of ordering some product that will end costing half the price of a pre owned could I just buy a lubricated condom, swab my Q-tip and use that?

  • Awesome!!

My PS2 stopped working about 2 months ago, and I thought for sure I was going to have to buy a new one. Thankfully I found this before I did! I didn't have the clipper lube, but I did use WD40 and it worked perfectly! This was easy enough that a non-tech chick like myself could do it! My husband is going to be so happy he doesn't have to go out and buy me a new one :) Thanks!

  • Thank You!

I haven't been able to use my PS2 for almost a year now because I had an issue where the disc would just make crazy sounds and it never worked. You gave some good tips to help me get to where I needed to get. The issue with mine is that my laser was farther back on the poles, so the gold ribbon wasn't as exposed. Luckily your video had a good view of the inside, and I noticed that there was an issue there. I moved up the laser to the correct position, and lube it up. Thank you very much, I can now enjoy my games again. I was about to throw out some money for a damn PS3. Thanks again!

    Thanks,
Your tutorial resurrected a ps2 that had been languishing in our basement for almost two years. The kids are having a blast rediscovering their old games.

Got my PS2 from eBay delivered today, together with 32 games. Unpacked the boxes, plugged it in...NO Action. Dang you eBayer!

Before making a big stink towards the eBay seller I thought to have a Google at it. Came to this video. Gave it a go, since warranty seal was already gone.

Two funny things discovered while opening it up.
    1) One screw missing...
    2) The coinshaped battery was not in place and there was a sealed new one in plastic lying inside the console...

Got pretty irritated by finding my out about this.
But, anyway I followed the tips and ...

SHE WORKS and the NOISE is GONE.
I used WD40 by the way.

    Thanks for the great tip!

ps: Will put a link up on eBay to this video for dodgy sellers.
