Families don't make money sending their kids to shaolin temples, no, as the temples themselves need money to provide for the students. 9 to 10 hours a day training martial arts and this is just one thing you get.

What you said about the Shaolins are true, but these aren't Shaolin monks nor is what they're doing Shaolin related. Major cities throughout China have 'theaters' (for lack of a better word) where orphans and kid from destitute homes are given into service in return for feeding them. Jackie Chan and Samo Hung are two people who came from these 'theater' homes
