http://www.fertur-travel.com/cusco_tours.html Sacred Valley Tour The Sacred Valley follows the Urubamba river from the market town of Pisac, through the agricultural terraces that were once the engine room of the Inca empire and finishes at Ollantaytambo, an almost untouched Inca town, with an imposing temple looming over the valley. The day starts with a walk through the Pisac markets. The town is swathed in white tarpaulins three days a week, under them stall holders compete to sell traditional artworks and textiles, huge wood fired ovens bake empanadas and guinea pigs, and the central plaza is filled with women selling fresh produce, with dozens of potato and corn varieties on show. On the ridge above, the ruined fortress of Inca Pisac protects the southern end of the Sacred Valley while the Temple of the Sun shows the precision stonework Inca architects reserved for their most important religious buildings. The road through the valley passes through the small towns of Coya, Lamay and Calca, and the larger center of Urubamba, surrounded on all sides by the astonishing andenes the agricultural terraces that fueled the Inca Empire, and gave the Andes mountain range its name. The town Ollantaytambo gives an insight into the Inca way of life, with streets, houses and watercourses that survived the Spanish conquest. The imposing ridge leading up to the stunning views from the Temple of the Sun is a string of gigantic terraces, a fortress strong enough to repel the Spanish. The unfinished temple at the top leaves you wondering how the Incas managed to move enormous rocks around the valley and up its ridges to shape them into precision stone walls by hand.
