Two of my favourite Survival or outdoors books. The SAS Handbook you all most likely know about. But the Backpackers Field Manual you may not. If you are into hiking or backpacking, you need to read these books! Not to many people have done survival book reviews, so if you have some, show the video!

  • OK, now I remember ...

OK, now I remember when I said the everyday laymen could only take one thing, and I stick to that statement. Your everyday laymen with a good pair of shoes will die.

Shoes are not as important as you make them out to be. With this book, you can make shoes, with shoes, you cant learn how to make traps, track, make a knife, etc....

The rescuers will just find a dead laymen with good shoes on.

  • Plus, if you know ...

Plus, if you know how you can make shoes, in any climate, people have been doing it for thousands of years before commercial shoes came along.

I would rather have a knife if I could only have ONE thing, not shoes or clothes.

  • Actually, I dont ...

Actually, I dont think that is true. I dont know what you mean by instead, I never really said take this book only into the woods, there are a million things above books on the list of things to take.

But as to what you said, about the mind "improvising" you are wrong, as illustrated by the thousands of dead hikers that where unable to survive, and looking at their stories we know that with a little knowledge they could have.

Plus, when stressed, you forget what you learned.

  • I'd tell them to ...

I'd tell them to get a good pair of boots instead. The mind will start to improvise on its own when placed in a survival situation as long as it is calm. If you're feet are "damaged" you are absolutely screwed. No gathering wood for fire, no food gathering or water. Nothing.

  • Thanks, that is ...

Thanks, that is something I would like to see more of from us survival guys, is book reviews. You can learn a lot from the net, but in my experience, you can learn a lot more from books than you can the net, just IMO.
