This is a home video of my cousin (who later went on to fly F-14 tomcats) when he was training off the coast of Flordia to land on a carrier. This was filmed in the 1970's. He is flying a training jet of some sort.
Since I am in the military (AF), I love these kind of videos. Just a few things though. There is no way this video was shot in the 70's. The quality is way to clear. Secondly, the person in the video is a LT CMDR (O-4) and would not be in training to fly a new jet that late in his career.

These days he lives in Kentucky and calls himself danny12. He even posts comments in metacafe clips. Sad case. Works in pizza deliveries as a "boy"

I also have a night trap, but it isnt that good. Basically you see glowing lights coming closer.
Great...well done. Was the original film? That would explan the quality.

By zbone 1164007956 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAnd F-18's entered service in the early 1980's, which are clearly visible on the deck during landing.
By bingo123 1163968426 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethat thinks the F/A-18's entered service in the early eighties, you are all wrong. In 1973, the Navy was looking for a cheaper version of the F-14 and they finally came up with the F/A-18. The Hornet entered service around 1978, and I quote wikipedia, "McDonnell rolled out the first F/A-18A on 13 September 1978, marked with "Navy" on the left and "Marine Corps" on the right. It took its first flight on 18 November." That is when they were first being released and then it took time to finally retire all the other jets such as the F-4's and A-7E's and A-6's. So it was probably rare to see an aircraft carrier with that many hornets on it in the 1970's therefore this video was probably made in the 1980's or maybe even the 1990's.
But don't go around saying that the Hornets are an 80's jet, cause you are wrong.
The Lockheed/Martin F/A-18 Hornet was built only to replace the A-7 Corsair II in carrier service.
By Jets rok! 1169713555 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNo matter what it's an amazing video....and could it have been filmed late December 1980?
Either way, you have to appreciate it....notice that left bank he makes as he comes to the carrier to reduce airspeed than hits full power as he lands in case he misses the wire....best footage I've ever seen of a carrier landing. Period.
I mean late December 1979

By Naardenhg 1163943194 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveGood video. This is definitely an S-3 Viking (HOOVER as we called them). You can tell by the TF-34 engines that sounds like a vacuum cleaner. They were initially built in 1972 and intro'ed to the Navy in 1974. There were 187 of them built between 74-78. They were primarily used as sub hunters but eventually turned into full time flying gas stations. They are all decommisioned except for a couple of squadrons in Jacksonville, Fl. with their end coming close. The pilot is a LCDR and looking at the helmet design...possibly from VS-21 stationed with the USS Kitty Hawk until they were decom'ed a couple of years back. FYI...the pilot is also not using an oxygen mask but has a mike close to his mouth which is another indication that he is in an S-3. All other carrier fast jet pilots use the oxygen mask. Judging by the configuration of the aircraft on the carrier..looks doesn't look that old. Just info from a guy that was in an S-3 squadron! Hope this helps clear some air!

By BT57 1226584311 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe f-14 was built around the pheonix missile. the navy needed an all-weather and a multirole jet. which is the reason why they got rid of the tomcat. sux though. hornets S**k i know this cuz i work on em and i love the 14. we just decommed the 14 almost a year ago. that is either an s-3 or a prowler. and that windscreen shows it's an s-3.
By yaboi40 1177709377 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removenow that sum one said it. the s-3 is a 4 seater a/c. i know i was on cruise wit em and they sound exactly like a hoover. i hated that. they decommin soon though so we can use that gay a** super hornet.
By yaboi40 1177709223 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewe do have a training command that trains every pilot on the east coast. we even had a former co of a marine squadron come through. i think he was co of the marine squadron that 106 attached me to. look up vfa-106. they train and retrain pilots. and the f-14 came into service in 1972. so at that time he could have been converting from the f-4 phantom. just to tell ya.
By yaboi40 1177709007 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI find it hard to believe that anyone that knows anything about Naval aircraft would think this is anything other than an S-3. Plain and simple, that is what it is. sounds like it, looks like it. great video!!! not from the 70's though. the pilot is a LCDR, you can see his oak leaf on his shoulder.

Panzeees!!!
was a government camera. Videotaping flight from inside the cockpit is a no-no. Not to say I haven't done it along with every other pilot in the service. There have been at least two air to air collisions resulting from aircrews making
"hero films" while flying in formation. Interesting, but when you're flying a fingertip formation while looking through your viewfinder, if the camera is set to wide-angle, you believe there is more space between you than there really is. For this reason, I doubt the camera was government issue. Nice flim though.
im no expert in jets, but dude, there is no way that vid was taken in the 70's. maybe ur cuz 'JOINED' the military in the 70's and u dont know ur family that well. OR ur so fukced up in the head that u just made all of this S**t up.

I did 9 yrs in the navy, one of my last squadrons was a S3 squadron. Turbo fan engines sound like no other, and the S3 has two of them. Who ever thought this was an EA6-B should keep their thoughts to themselves.

I myself am struggling to understand why a home made video from the 70's in in such clear perspective, its looks like an up to date video as usually the footage from the 70's era has hair line smudges all over it but yet the film is crystal clear is it not?
By flecky 1163895740 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethis is a EA-6B PROWLER, this plane is used for electronic warfare system to support air strikes and ground troops
By EMYTONES 1163892650 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveLook at the pristine video quality. Even professional tv cameras wasn't this good in the seventies. To me it looks like they're using a dv camera or something. My guess is that this is tops ten years old.
By Quasam 1163891961 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis could be an s-3 viking. They have side by side seating as well.
By 19dcavscout 1163886046 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt does look and sound like an A-6 and they are a side by side seating arrangement. But I couldn't imagine them using an A-6 for training pilots. I know that T-2 buckeyes were used, but they were a front-back seater jet.
By Solman 1163830444 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI was just watching the video again and came to realize that it is definitely not an A-6. A-6's have the refueling boom on the nose of the jet, just in front of the cockpit.
By Solman 1163851429 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeit's an S-3. I was a back-seater for them and worked on them for 8 years.

By Marino fan 1163991099 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDon't thoughs refueling booms retract? And, possibly enough not to be seen from that vantage point? Joint a question, I am not sure my self.
