Elizabeth's Wildlife Center TV Interview about saving wildlife.
on the ground how do the parent birds get them back up into the nest? being on the ground is in much more dangerous ie cats, dogs and other predators. so what should one do leave them on the ground or take them to a sanctuary?
By perea4091 1247352196Good question:
The answer is that :
parents do not put the babies back into the nest. When the babies have feathers and can hop, the babies then tumble to the ground (they haven't learnt how to fly yet) and stay there for a few days where the parents then teach them to fly.
yes, they are very vulnerable to predators. Predators will take these babies for food. Cats will play with them and usually leave them (wounded or dead).
You won't be able to take all the hundreds of thousands of birds that are in this position to a sanctuary. This is a normal part of the birds development. They do not leave the nest flying it is a learned procedure. The parents will continue to feed the babies on the ground and teach them how to find food. The babies do much better with their parents. If the babies are injured or truly orphaned, then they do need to go into care. The parents also mourn for their babies if they can't find them so it is best to leave healthy babies for the parents to raise. If you have a cat, this is the time to keep them in for sure
