    I have watched shows on when they do stuff like this. They remove all the fuel, oil, and other hazardous materials before they do this. By sinking a ship in certain areas, it actually can be beneficial to the sea life. It creates an artificial reef and can increase the sea life in the area. So before you feel the need to hug your tree and voice out, do some research on the matter.

      If you " Listen " you will hear that the vessel is 30 years old and de-commisioned. That means removing/stripping out anything and everything that could be of use. The so called pollution you see is no doubtedly sea water that has been sat in bilge tanks for however long and strated to corrode them.       The ship was actually a stripped down hull, all equipment and pollutants were removed prior to the exercise. The ship was the de-commisioned HMAS Torrens (Destroyer Escort 53), sunk by the HMAS Farncomb (Collins class submarine). The 'dirty' cloud is actually a cordite cloud from the warhead (a conventional explosive). The water was not polluted and it is now an incredible dive site and artificial reef. Search for photos and you should be able to see the amount of sea life that now populates the area.
