  • It's called induced current

When lightenings happen, they suddenly generate a huge electromagnetic field. It's well known in physics that when you have a sudden change in the EM field, it will induce electric current in nearby metal objects. This current would usually be much smaller than the current of the lightening itself, so you won't get hurt much because of this. I myself once saw sparks coming out from the washing machine when a lightening stroke a tree in my yard.

Anyway, this secondary effect will only scare you a bit, it probably won't kill anyone. If that guy in the movie was really stroke by the lightening, I don't think he will be like "oh f*king S**t " at all!

    • Its not from a magnetic field.

You were right about the induced emf (electro-motor force). But this is only propegated in a loop. and yes there would be many "loops" of conductors in the motorcycle(like a washer even). BUT! the induced current from the rapidly changing magnetic flux through this "loop" could not cause a shock. instead the current would only flow around the "loop". This shock would have been cause by a rather massive electric field. this is what happened: 1) lightning hit 2) electric charges (like electrons) accellerate through the ground(not really through air much due to its very high resistance) 3) when it got to the bikes kickstand the current whent up the kickstand, though the bike, through the guys body and back to the ground through his feet. this is because there is less resistance taking that path than going through the projected portion of ground below him and the bike. and yes this could of been fatal. the same thing happens with cows, the electricity will flow up the front legs, through the heart, and down the back legs. so if you are in a field and can\'t find shelter, try not to spread yourself out to much, and keep your feet together otherwise it will go up on leg and down the other.

    • Not Really

Just the active travelling through the ground cannot produce an eletric shock in a human. The person would need to be earthed out, hence em field through the air

    • you seem to be smart

has zakkariacha (mr dude) said anything stupid to you. he like to laugh at the usa (WTC) its time to shut him down. i will have my brother in the service ask his general to find out whom he is.

    • Could have also

Been Ground current, Although not as likely becasue cement does not conduct.

By OWENISGOD! 1164245225 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Wrong

cement does conduct quite efficiantly depending on the type of surface. Concrete is a conductor

  • what is going on?

the lightening goes from ground up as the earths' natural electronic field conducts to the vapour in the air, it's entirely pheasable that the charge could conduct through the moisture on the ground and up the kick stand, from there it could easily back track through the bike's earthing point and into the ignition system, then it simply fires out of that king lead as he tried to hook-up the spark plug.

    • spark

you see the spark around the bike which is green with a blue halo, which proves he almost had that spark plug in.

(the copper fitting at the end of the plug would cause the spark to appear green whilst the fuel vapours from the ports supply the faint blue halo, due to the 2-stroke's mixture of engine oil and petrol)

  • Question

Is the coincidence referring to the lightning strike and the sparks flying at the same time, or the fact that the camera just happened to be zoomed in right where sparks were about to fly?

  • Simple Science

It's not an "act of god" it's lightning that struck not too far away. His kickstand absorbed some of the electrical charge from the bolt. Then the static from his shirt and such caused an arc in the bike.

    ok...maybe not "that" simple.
