Crazy Ice Storm Footage

this is a very common misconception. the thing is, is that water doesn't freeze well by itself. freezing rain/(or in this case spray) happens when the droplets get supercooled. raindrops can actually get to temperatures of -35 degrees Celsius without freezing. what it needs is something to freeze to, so as soon as it touches anything it freezes almost immediately. this is the same reason why in the middle of any snowflake is a piece of dust, its refered to as a freezing nuclei (FN)

While tiny cloud droplets can get to around -40 degrees without freezing due to surface tension properties, rain drops can only be a few degrees below freezing before turning into sleet. While freezing rain can happen due to the phenomenon you describe, if you look at the pictures only boats and other objects in or around the water are covered in ice. Also, you can see that only the bottoms of trees near the water are covered in ice, and the streams of ice are pointing away from the ocean. It's definately freezing spray.

this ice storms and others are caused by supercooled rain. Water in the atmosphere will not freeze into snow if there is nothing to freeze too(like dust, they are also referred to as freezing nuclei) in situations like this the rain falling can get down to temperatures of -35 degrees celsuis. and when it touches something like a car it instanty freezes. Don't feel bad buddy, i didn't know this untill i came to university.
