  • nothing to do with air currents boys, the fact is he tied it to only one skid...so as soon as he started pulling, it pulled too hard to the one direction and sent it into the water. If he had attached the rope to the middle of the underside of the chopper where it should be attached, all would be fine. Wasn't casued by a too short cable, or too long cable, or wind currents. etc

      That was a Bell 206 Jet Ranger. It's just about the most underpowered helicopter in the market today. If the total weight of the people inside gets over 635 lbs, it can't take on a full tank of gas because it wouldn't get off the ground. The bottom line in this incident is weight and pilot error. It just didn't have enough power to pull the boat through the water and when the pilot pushed forward too far, the force that was holding the aircraft in the air was redirected forward the extent of not being able to produce enough lift and the helicopter started to go down. The turn at the end was the effect of the pilot trying to pull in power in an attempt to pull out of it, and when power is applied, the nose of the helicopter tends to yaw (turn) right (if it's an American helicopter). The pilot used so much power from the engine in the pull up that he didn't have enough to effect a left pedal input to keep the nose out in front and the helicopter turned right and entered on its left side. Simply a story of an underpowered helicopter with a cocky pilot. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots.

  • A bad idea to begin with

    I dont reall think that had much to do with where the cable was tied or how long the cable was... that chopper was never going to be able pull a boat through the water or lift it out of it.

    If it was a military helicopter with a 2 jet engines it would be different but that kind of helicopter just doesnt have the lift needed to support itself and a boat (with water resistance as well)

      Pilot error, He changed the dynamic balance of the helicopter by tying the line to the skid.
      He further screwed up by applying power so fast should have slowly applied power.
      This Heli has more then enough power to tow that boat, It’s a twin turbine bird.
      I have seen a Helicopter tow a destroyer into port

      Bottom line is that it was a really dumb thing to do. If this was in the U.S the pilot would never fly again

    This is a passenger helicopter, not at all designed for what they were trying. Even the USCG with extemely powerful choppers have a cable cutter built in to the winch for boat captains trying to save the vessel. Moral of the story ..... Don't tow a boats (or anything) with a passenger helicopter.

    They needed a longer rope/cable, the short cable kept the helicopter close to the ground where air currents upset it, causing it to veer into the water...

      If you were watching, the stupid co-pilot attached the cable to a side landing strut making the helicopter unstable as he pulled away. Should have been winched from a central point underneath. Too many dumb people just don't think!
