  • not sure why anyone would intentionally ...

Normally you practice by pulling the power to idle and letting it windmill.

    • Because

This is similar to the training we did, and the point of it is that you find yourself in a situation where your engine is dead/shot out/ removed/ dry, seemingly without a "get-out-safe" option, and you HAVE to land it.
Can best compare it to a chopper auto-rotate - use the forces available to you, time it, plan it, land it.
If you're going in hard, find a spot where you're most likely to survive, tall bamboo, young trees, along the shallows of a beach, you name it; if it can slow you down without killing you, DO IT!

    • Because pulling the throttle to idle

Would not cause the propeller to 'windmill'. The prop would turn at the same speed that the engine dictates on tickover. Also the prop is fixed not variable, so it would be impossible to feather. BTW, this is called a 'dead stick' landing.

    • Because it's not the same...

The prop doesn't produce as much drag when windmilling as it does when stopped. It's close, but not the real thing.
