Glass hard drive covers?
I think it would be nice to have glass covers on hard drives. Mount them externally :) Then watch the disk defrag process :)

  Some Raptor X HDs (Western Digital) have transparent covers.
  Besides, it's easy to mod that yourself if you ain't all thumbs :-)

- it is not a stepper motor
  The drive arm actuator is a simple lateral voice coil motor. The motor that drives the spindle is a stepper motor, but I don't think it was what you were referring to. I'm not even sure if it can go into a detent (hold) mode.
  
  Some early drives did use real stepper motors, but I doubt you would find that in any drive over 40megs. Biggest one I have that does that is a 10meg drive. The heads on those drives move laterally (straight up and down), not from a vector like modern drives.
  
  Though some very large, old drives do have arms that work like the newer ones. I have a 40meg one from 1981 that uses a 1/6hp motor to power the spindle that has arms that move from vertex. It has a smoke colored see-through enclosure. It had a molex power line for the electronics and a household AC line for the spindle motor. Coolest drive ever.

It's good that you put the warning afterwards to those who just might try it. Anyway, it's certainly a very creative way to make sure that no one ever gets a hold of personal data—making a video and most likely giving the drive a death sentence in the process that is.

  And he provides us with a lot of clips. Personally I find some interesting, some not so interesting... some useful; some not so useful. Just because you're not interested in the subject matter, doesn't mean he ought not to make them. I'm not interested in all the many many pictures of cars, but I don't leave a comment on them saying they're boring and shouldn't be on metacafe. I just leave them for the people who DO like cars.
