hum.. people should know you don't get the actual house address where the other computer is but only the address of where the ISP (internet service provider) is, i.e. verizon, aol, etc. i'm amazed you won over a 1000$ bucks for this..

First of all, the tracert command has no application in this video, because the IP is given before the trace stops.....
Eg:
C:\> tracert www. google. com
Tracing route to www. l. google. com [209. 85. 135. 147]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 8 ms 17 ms 8 ms xxx. xxx. xxx. xxx
......
y 106 ms 83 ms 115 ms 209. 85. 135. 147
Now.. the IP from hop y is the same with the IP given before the trace begins... which makes the trace useless.. because you already have the IP adress that you want to place in the website......
Second.... you can just type in the hostname in the website form, instead of writing the IP write down www. whitehouse. gov, it works....
Third .... it gives the location of the ISP and not the location of the host.

Remember the difference b/ween ur public and private(LAN) IP. The above works for public IP. Also, tracert may not work all the time - depending on the security of the subnets through which the packet hops to reach the destination.

That will only show the public IP address owned by the Internet Service Provider. From there, if you wish to locate a home user you will have to use social engineering and call the ISP. Then find out at the date and time who had that IP address. That information does not come easily though.

That is right near MIT. I am an MIT student, but that location is not exactly on campus. MIT is a Class A network, meaning it owns 1/256 of all IP addresses. Any IP address from MIT starts with 18 (somethink like 18.*.*.*) and this address is a 64. 64 is assigned to the American Registry for Internet Numbers www.arin.net, which is a huge source of IP addresses for large websites and servers, also including google. The server hosting whitehouse.gov is in Cambridge, MA.

Instead of tracert it´s better to use the nslookup-command. It gives the same result, but faster:
nslookup www.whitehouse.gov
will tell you the IP-address of the server where they´re hosted. It may also give you additional information about the site, like aliases and such.

The web site leaves out the "D" in the IP address to find the location of the person. Try typing in www. ip- adress. com. It does work! Trust me!
