You people are just as clueless as most of the general public are about birdstrikes. Try doing a little Google research on birdstrikes. You might be surprised at what you find.

  • how many engines?

the bird appeared to hit the left-hand side of the plane. was there not a second engine on the other side?

By harvestmouse 1154390618 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • one engine, two air intakes

there's one engies sat behind the pilot and a bit of fuel. there are air intakes on either side.
these engines are tested to withstand birdstrikes with average size birds, but a bird that big would probably do some serious damage to your car if it hit at several hundred miles a hour!!!!

  • The Good Thing......

Well at least both pilots came out of it alive and they are both back flying again (although the Instructor pilot will never fly fighter jets again).

That bird must have a very sharp beak to break down a plane. Or he is just flying to fast. I could`nt even tell what kind of bird it was.

  • A little insight

The russians genetically altered birds which gave them the capacity to carry five pounds of c4 in it's backside and the ability to home in on jet fighters. It's all a plot to render our forces incapable of responding when cornel saunders comes to invade.

  • Well handled

The crew handled this one well.I've flown the Goshawk( McDonnel Douglas version of the Hawk) and she's touchy on take off and landing,IIRC less than 250knots and 1500 feet agl with engine failure (which they'd get with a bird down there) you eject

  • This S**ks ..

I agree with the previous comments, you would think with all our technology that we could avoid a single bird from taking down a plane.....hmmm

By jolynn 1129418926 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • One of the pilots was seriously injured.

One of the pilots was seriously injured possibly due to the forces exerted by the ejection and parachute landing angle.

  • hmmm...

odd, isn't it? we have all the technology, yet nature always finds a way to show us our devices are inferior. one bird took out a plane.

    • so true, think about this

u may think this is very unlikly, but its not. It only happens when a plane is in its take off and landing phases, this is the height at wich birds fly normally. Now in major airports there are huge taxi ranks, taxi drivers arnt gunna leave their car to put their last bit of fries or hamburger in the bin. so they dump it figure the birds will eat it. The birds come to it like s*** on velcro. birds fly away in flocks into path of take off. this is a 1/10000000 chance but in heathrow something like 250 planes take off per day. So you figure the math an it doesnt seem that unlikely for this to happen in comercial airports.

    • i've seen how they deal with it

at gatwick airport, so probably the same elsewhere ... a land rover with a big loudspeaker on the back, which drives round the perimiter making loud noises to scare the birds away. do people really choose 'motorised bird scarer' as a career??

    • Welcome to the real world.

Unlike video games, real technology can be a fragile thing. Like a gambler, you have to play the odds. Odds are, this will not happen, but as you so graphically saw, it CAN happen. Now if they wanted to add slotted intakes on the jet along with an obstruction removal system, the damage could be avoided, but the extra weight would reduce the performance of the aircraft making it useless in combat. These planes are meant to fly on the edge of performance. That is why you never underestimate a military pilot. He does daily what most people never dream of, and in most cases (like this one I’m sure) they survive it.

By BeenThere 1136573455 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Indeed

Although most aircraft can take bird strikes without so much as scratching the paint, fighters are designed differently. For example to test new engines of airliners the shoot frozen turkeys at very highspeeds into the engines while they are running, and the engines just shred them and continue running normally.

    • Edit to above

And when I said "the shoot", I meant "they shoot". :)

    • Good work.

They were going to try to make it back to the field as indicated by the pilot’s comment “Around the horn. Restart.” They started out at a heading of 285 deg. In order to land they would have to make the right turn to about 200 – 210 deg then cut back left for the strip once they reached it. The situation was made worse when the computer told them “Gear not down!” If this is an armed aircraft with explosives underneath it would not be a pleasant landing. Add the low altitude and an air speed well under 130 knots equals time to hit the silk. Good training, calm heads, and proper procedures saved these men. My hat is off to them. Well done.

    • what is there to understand?

A bird went into the engine and the pilot couldn't control the aircraft any more, so he ejected!

    • The Camera

The camera is not actually in the cockpit, it's in the nose of the jet. By the way if you're ever in any kind of aircraft never ever say eject, eject, eject. Ever. plus the forces experienced by ejecting is over 20G!

By 1128328480 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Yeah well ...

I wasn't suggesting to eject, it's just that I think it's the ONLY way they may have survived! Coz the aircraft does look like heading for the ground in the end, no? And whatever the G-force is during ejecting, I personally would rather go through them than crashing, no? ;-)

By 1128337404 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • ejecting

yeah ejecting would be the best way 2 get out but all im saying is that ejecting isn't very nice :) In fact in the RAF (royal air force) you're only allowed 2 eject twice in your whole career! then you're fired

By Carper 1128357944 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • I should expect so ...

I mean, dumping a 27 million dollar aircraft, if not more, once is already enough, let alone twice! LOL!

By 1128424729 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • I know...

but surely a pilots life is worth more than 27 million dollars! The ejecter seats are actually controlled by the weapons division of the air force and actually have firing pins!

By 1128442792 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Reason for discharge

The reason why you get the boot from the RAF isn't because of costs its due to the fact that everytime you eject your spinal coloumn is put under so much pressure its crushed causing sometimes serious damage. Hence the reason the limit is set to 2, thats if you make it to the second time round. Personally once would be enough for me!

It takes someone with a positive IQ to understand and process a single fact without criticising it. What were you drunk when you said that? What's the problem here?

    • Listen cheese whiz

It takes more than a "positive IQ" to talk about something you have no clue about other than what your RC plane did as a kid or what you watched on the Discovery Channel. That comment about 2 ejections and your fired is bullshit. You are bullshit, get your facts straight instead of trying to show off to your boyfriend! Where you smoking crack when you made that comment?
