  the camera man was holding the camera. for reasons you dont really get unless you're fighting an octopus underwater yourself, it would be a bad idea for him to intervene until the divers life was actually at risk. they have signals for events like these, especially when they're experienced divers like this one is.

- Octopational Hazzard.
  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and if I was the cameraman I would not intervene because a video clip of someone getting killed by an octopus would have to be worth a huge amount of money from the world media compared to someone just getting a "HUG" from an octopus then getting away.

  not really. if he hadnt fought, he would have died. but he was able to save himself rather than needing the camera man to intervene and put them both at risk.

you cannot just intervene to "help", you might even do more damage! Unless he's on the verge of life, it's better to leave him handle it on his own. Besides, there were three people there, and it wasn't a dep water dive which means that they didn't have a tri-mixture in the airtanks which also means that they could've given him supply from their own air anytime he needed it, unlike deep sea dives where the air is mixed just for your own metabolism! his buddies knew he was going to make it, and all three of them are obviously experienced divers, so we aren't going to tell them when to intervene to help, they know it very well! ;)

  Octopus, cuttlefish & squid etc are all extremely powerful.
  Octopus are also immensely intelligent too!
  
  As for him being in danger, this is very true, as the octopus have a beak that will crush the divers skull about as easily as a human hand can crush an egg
