A F-14 plane explodes in the sky.
I was aboard the Uss. Mahlon S. Tisdale when this same inncident happened to us. Anyone who believes that this jet was shot down or came apart because of supersonic speeds is a fool. "WE" did not shoot the plane down, and these planes are designed to fly at that rate of speed. I helped recover the pilot and the funeral was very hard to attend due to the fact I held his lifeless, burnt and dismembered body in the water and put it into the rescue boat. He was not an American idiot, he was a patriot a father and a husband,,,,So show some respect! All F-14 planes were grounded for a day sometime after this video.

By Jets rok! 1169711940 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhy did the jet explode? What happened if it wasn't the high speeds? I can't see how engine failure could rip it apart like that...
I was unaware that people died on this. As soon as I saw a parachute I thought that the ejector was probably automatically engaged before anyone could be harmed. You say that you had to recover the pilot. Was there another pilot and were they ok? (I see 2 parachutes).
If your message is not a hoax, then I am indeed sorry that you were involved in such an ordeal.
you really have no knowledge of aviation do you. When an engine lets go, it's catostraphic. All it takes is one turbine blade to anihilate an aircraft. Think of fast it's spinning.
By Conan33 1230224262 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou were right, robertii, the Grumman F-14A Tomcat is a carrier based air-to-air interceptor, and indeed has a crew of TWO, which is why you saw a second parachute. Good pickup.
By Jets rok! 1169712074 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove "A September 21, 1995 video of a F-14 fly-by that goes wrong. The aircraft nearly breaks the sound barrier (you can see the mist forming), then explodes because of what was apparently an engine compression failure. The two pilots, from VF-213 (Black Lions) ejected successfully. The carrier battlegroup, with the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), was 1,400 kilomters west of Guam at the time."
Since after the fireball you can see enough of the complete airframe spinning after it, I do believe that it is possible that the above statement is true. Though it would really S**k to eject at that speed. Happened to another pilot on an intruder and he nearly suffocated because when he was half ejected out of the plane it was like drinking from a fire hose.
Please ignore the previous childish statements.
There are pilots and then there are Naval aviators.
I'd trust a naval aviator.
Its clear to see that the jet was traveling at super sonic speeds. We see the wave buld-up behaving like a lense about 13 seconds into the clip, one could call it a giant magnifying glass. This lense effect is potentially dangerous if traveling away from the sun. Sonic waves have the power to rip a plane to shreds, but they can also fry the plane, just like a magnifying glass can fry an ant. It looks like this jet gave away to stress casued by the wave.

By mycypress5 1136695847 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI think this one is a different view of the F-14 that was being filmed by the discovery (?) channel. They interviewed the pilots right after and it was a mechanical failure. BTW add the AV-8 Harrier to the USMC list of fighter jets they fly. I've done 20 years USN in Air Traffic and another 6 as a civilian as well as holding my own private pilots cert., aircraft mishaps are part of aviation but never to be taken lightly.
By Tinpusher 1134840034 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehow the hell you were able to write out your life story when answering a question. I am in USN also and thank god I never met you - get a life dumb ass.

By 1130909801 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI salute and respect you and what you've done.
By Tinpusher 1134840162 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNow thats how we induce what we like to call a spin at 756 miles per hour.
Sailors at the end are saying two parachutes, two parachutes.
Watch this again and you can clearly see when he banks, he loses control, flips a few times and ruptures a fuel tank as the cat breaks up. Nasty nasty nasty.
The Army now has Tomkitties? Kewl...
that tomcat was flying way over 756mph... if look at the vid u can see two sonic shock waves, that is it was travelling at approx 660mps, it flipped and disintegrated
By landie 1134340395 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt appears to be catostrophic failure of an internal engine component which caused the explosion. The Army does not fly tactical jets. The Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force do.
By 1126921971 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMarine Corps does not have F-14.
By Elisha Cuthbert 1128831826 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFYI - The United States Marine Corps does fly jets. They currently fly the F/A 18 Hornet and the EA6B Intruder. The list of aircraft the Marine Corps flies is pretty extensive if you are interested in doing any research. You might try www.usmc.mil
By 1128862716 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBob flew an F14 in the Army? The Army has lots of Carriers does it?
By 1126919730 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhat were the sailors saying?

By freeportians 1130365741 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhich army was it?
Did the pilot/s survived?
US Navy/Marine Corp/Air Force (one of them, but not army)
Yes, they survived, they ejected and were rescued.
At least 1 of them died. he was too badly burned.
By Jets rok! 1169712518 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI think that may have been caused from breaking the sound barrier you can see hints of that while flying past the ship?
By The hopsicals 1126898829 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe plane was flying subsonic. The atmospheric conditions makes the "halo" appear because of pressure change around the plane. I've seen it on airshow with subsonic fly-by.

dumbshit mistake caused by idiotic american pilots showing off, so glad i never flew with morons like that!!!!

Wow! I don't know where you're from, but that was just about the most childish comment I can immagine. I doubt that you have ever flown a military aircraft. If you had, you would know that any gas turbine engine designed is subject to foreign object damage (FOD) which can lead to catostrophic failure of internal components. I'm glad you will never be flying anything that comes close to what the now retired F-14 Tomcat is capable of.
These were two gr8 pilots doing what they were trained to do, not showing off! SHAME ON YOU! These were 2 lives!
