  • Thanks!

Thanks a ton because I was hearing ALL of these noises so I had backed up my hard drive then about a month later I had to get a new hard drive because my other one failed. That proves my point its very helpful to recognize the noises of your hard drive.

  • File Sharing

The best way to burn out hard drives is with file sharing. To be safe file sharing should be done on a non system drive. Also it is important that drives have adequate cooling. If you do a lot of file sharing you may want to look into setting up raid 0 for your file sharing. I learned the hard way and went through a couple of hard drives in a year.

Do you honestly believe that file sharing causes more strenuous usage patterns than normal daily operation? Don't answer that; it was a rhetorical question. And FYI, RAID0 would be useless for file sharing, since even the slowest modern hard drive is several times the speed of the fastest residential Internet connection. Also, by nature RAID0 increases risk of data loss, so it's rarely warranted. You were right about heat being a concern, though. Well done.

  • oh oh !

I heard these sounds too many times. Each time it was too late, users have to delay too long to call repairer

Your OS will let you know soon enough if your hard drive is going to fail. Usually a read or write failure. If you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled drives, you will know immediately during power on boot if a drive is failing.
And yes, I can actually spell complicated words, unlike a lot of comments on MetaCafe.
