  Magnets work on both steel and stainless steel. What do they teach in school now adays? Go to a Mcdonalds and slap a magnet on the side of the shake machine for proof. Perhaps you're thinking of aluminum.
  This is obviously a liquid (yes probably oil) that has a fine metallic powder in it. Not all of the liquid is reactive to the magnets, and after the magnet "sucks up" the powder, the remaining fluid is less responsive. If it were a magnetic fluid, it should all fly to the magnet, not just chunks of it.

  That's true. I have seen the demonstrations of this oil in an auto show on Discovery Channel. Its a damper oil.
