Literally! - a hole in a live cow! You can see directly into it's stomach! The green stuff is grass and hay. This is recorded at Veterinary University - and don't worry, guys - the cow isn't under any distress at all. Just eating, relaxing and getting attention. All in all having a better life than most livestock.

  • The point is....

Cows are rumenents along with other grass eating multi stomach mammals. One stomach chamber is called the rumen where of all things rumen fluid is made. Rumen is needed in the digestive process of rumenents and rumen fluid is fairly generic across these animals. This cow is a rumen donor, as sick rumenents commonly have problems producing rumen. Rumen is literally "dipped" out and fed to the sick rumenent to get their system kick-started. Lesson complete!

    • Actually the point...

Well cows are Ruminants.... But its not the "rumen fluid" they want. There are actually no secretions in the rumen. Bacteria live in there and ferment the cellulose they eat making it wet and gross like that... But since bacteria can only go through part of the digestion process (the part the cow cant) That leaves most of the energy available for the animal to digest. They want the bacteria, to give to the sick cow.

That is not the point though. More often those holes are for research purposes rather than medicinal reasons. Those holes are expensive....normal cows dont get them.

    • No...Not really..

Close but no cigar. This particular cow was used in a demonstration for veterinary students. Besides that they were used for a study in how different coarseness of the feed results in the development of the ruminal papillae and thus how well the nutrients are absorbed.
Have never heard of rumen "transfer" but sounds interesting. Don't think it is done in Denmark where this video is from.

  • Hrm...

Wasn't this on the Ripley's Believe It Or Not series?

Of course, I think they had permanently bolted down that cow's fistula.
Removing the outer ring sounds a bit uncomfortable, doesn't it?

    By ccwfalcon 1165593589
  • A fistula.

It's called a fistula, looks kind of gross!

    By spam1999 1165593833
    • Study

I saw something similar a couple of years ago, they do this in order to study what kind of food or grass the cow eat(when they are free) and what kind of sustitute can use.

      By chubeto4 1165597587
    • No, no...

They do that so vegetarian people can get something to eat out of a cow, the semi digested green stuff, it's rich in fiber =)

      By nesham 1165601268
  • Not real

    You can't see it's head

    By simba2006 1165586996
    • Yes you can!

When the guy pulls that ring from the hole the cow moves and you can see it's head behind him, you can even see when the cow moves its tail
