  • Let's get things straight;

    Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is not flamable or, most acids aren't. Hdrochloric acid isn't toxic either (stomach acid is hydrochloric acid); it is what's know as corrosive. The gas produced WAS Hdrogen gas, which IS flamable.

    And if you don't believe me here is something rom Wikipedia: "Mixing simple aluminium foil with hydrochloric acid produces hydrogen. The hydrogen can then be stored in a balloon. Upon application of a flame to the balloon it will produce a fiery explosion."

    The pressure of the Hydrogen gas produced was what caused the bottle to explode. The gas could stil be ignited afterwards producing an explosion.

    Hydrogen is only toxic when Chlorine gas is liberated from it.

    In future, if your such a moron that you don't know Hydrogen gas is flamable or think it's toxic as opposed to corrosive, look on Wikipedia.

    I don't know what product he used with the skull and cross bones on it but you could just replace that with "The Works" laundry detergent or drain cleaner, not sure which one of those it is but I know its "The Works" These are really fun to make. :)

      Toilet bowl cleaner. The Works makes an excellent pressure bomb, because it gives you about 3 minutes to run or whatever. Drop one in a garbage can right in the middle of town, and walk (yes walk) away. Try to keep fingerprints off it, if you do something this high-profile.

When this lining breaks down, this causes ulcers. This is also why your throat burns when you vomit, it's that stomach acid moving up your esophagus where there is no protective lining. But the pH of hydrochloric acid does vary depending on the molarity so we're both right.

    if you know that it can be purchased in hardware stores, how do you NOT know that it is stronger than 6M? its about 25-27% HCl by weight per gallon at home depot and you can only get it there in a box of two gallons for under 5 bucks.

    if anyone else insists upon doing this themselves, just keep in mind the cops or whoever else catches you trying to have fun wont like the reactants youre using. stick with dry ice

    I have done this many of times. I have always used a certain brand of toilet bowl cleaner, and tin foil. Good wholesome fun, and a great way to get children interested in chemistry. Oh, and the gases produced by the particular formula I use, IS NOT flamable.

      There IS hydrogen comes out from the reaction, but it will be kinda of impossible to lit it with cigarette. It will be blow away long before it can lit up the acidic-hydrogen cloud.

    • Hydrochloric Acid

      I use bowl cleaner at work to clean pouris moulds, and at most it just irritates your skin. Now if it were 100 % acid, it may actualy "burn" the skin, but with the bowl cleaner, I have accidently inhaled the mist countless times, and while it isn't pleasent to say the least, it wont kill you in that small of amounts. By no means am I an expert or even know all that much about chem, but we also use Bleach near the bowl cleaner, and from what I have heard, not a good chemical reaction if they mix.

      you can buy muratic acid at most hardware stores. It's not as harmful as you say it is. As a matter of fact, your morning coffee is probably a stronger acid than this muratic acid. it really all depends of the concentration of it.

      I dont know if you are talking about the same acid, but if hydrochloric acid is the same as muratic acid(that is what they said in the tittle). I used to work at qwal paint and they used it to etch cement but it is certainly not as dangerous as you say it is. for the most part acids dont burn you they eat away flesh.so if anything it might open some skin. I know that quall paint wouldnt be selling it if it were that dangerous

      But it's still EXTREMELY toxic, it's one of the mos powerful acids out there, as NikeVipera said one drop WILL cause second and third degree burns.

      As for acid spreading all over the place, its true, unless you use the exact amount of acid and metal required for all the reaction, in this case I can assure you that there was plenty of unreacted acid.

      This is basic chemistry Nakaza so shut up already

      The hydrochloric acid aluminum cause a reaction that releases hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas is very flamable and if there were a lit cigarette near the pressure explosion than there would have been a flame explosion. Moron, go back to school and retake chemistry.

      Hydrochloric acid is not flammable at all .And also: Acid + metal = oxid (in many case not toxic,in all cases not flammable, absolutly safe) + gas (in many cases H2) ,so when u put acid in a bottle and some metal, and bottle explode because of a gas presure ,it doesn't mean that acid will spread all over the place and kill 100 people like in holywood movies.

      In a chemistry lab you'd be considered at best a freak, at worst a lunatic, for using hydrochloric acid without eye and hand protection - and that's using it carefully, not trying to make soft drink bottle explode outside your garage.

      And yes, acid will spray all over the place because there will be plenty of unreacted acid still in the bottle when it explodes. If it gets in someone's eyes or on their skin then it won't be pretty.
