  • Why bother messing around with the syste...

All you need to do is...run msn messenger and select Tools from the Menu. Then select Options from the drop-down menu and then select General. Make sure the box next to 'Automatically run Messenger when I log onto Windows' is unchecked (empty).

    • hmm

You can do that... but in that case, messenger is not 100% DISABLED... if you go to Processes in task manager, you will still be able to see that and it keeps on cheking for updates.... to ensure that MSN is not even running in background you need to disable it from services.... I hope this will clarify

    • You are giving out incorrect information...

The title of your video refers to closing MSN Messenger, however the Messenger service that you are advocating disabling is in no way related to MSN Messenger. Furthermore, users should not be encouraged to interfer with System Services.

To prevent MSN Messenger from starting every time you start Windows, simply uncheck the box that says "Automatically run Messenger when I log onto
      Windows"...as per my previous post.

The Messenger Service that you refer to in your video was originally designed to allow system and network administrators to send messages to users. These messages take the form of pop-up windows. However, this service (not related to MSN Messenger) can be used maliciously by advertisers and software vendors and, apart from being very annoying, can potentially be used to distribute viruses and other malware.

If you are part of a corporate network your Network Administrator should already have taken a decision on whether to disable the Messenger Service or not. If you are a home user then you should consider disabling the Messenger Service.

If you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 applied, the Messenger Service is disabled by default.

I hope this clarifies the situation.
