Let's have more on these, especially the complicated ones
favoured by anglers the world over. It's easier to teach newbies
      with videos than books/pics.
Keep up the good job taffaknee!

if you want to bind to lines together, you are better off using the fisherman's knot, it retains more of the line's strength

and untie untill you put some real weight on your rope then try to untie it. Not as easy as it looks.

hes a genius, re-inventing a knot that is used all the time.

This is somthing you learn in boy scouts and i think is called a Reef Knot.

                • re-invented???

He didn't try to re-invent the knot, and you probably did learn the reef knot this year in boy scouts, but in the real world of hard knocks, that is young man a SQUARE KNOT.

Sorry cutmeister, but when I was a boy, I was taught that knot by a man who lived in "the real world of hard knocks" and he called it a reef knot (check wikipedia for reference). Calling it a square knot I guess is fine so long as you accept it may also be known as "jizzle my swizzle knot"!

both names are correct. However in sailing, and Im talking about shipping across oceans, not gay ass dingies across lakes. The term SQUARE Knot is used.

It is a square knot somtimes known as reef knot, no difference. don't post such nonsense as that, without first doing more research than wikipedia,

"Sqaure knot" and "jizzle my swizzle knot" can both be colloquial names for the officially named "reef knot" which is something you can not dispute. And don't get offended oldboy, but I think the only nonsense here is the state of your gramma!

only if it's attached to a sail, anytime other than then, it is a SQUARE KNOT. so i guess jizzle my swizzle knot and reef knot are colloquial for SQUARE KNOT.

                • Cutmeister I think I know the solution t...

Your source "meriam-webster dictionary" is an american dictionary. I looked it up and your defintion is quite right FOR AMERICANS.

On the other hand as we are speaking in English I took the time to look in a dictionary from the country that invented the language we are communicating in.

It does reckonise your square knot but only as a US term, not as an English one. The English also reckonise that you spell the word colour as "color". Although it does reckonise your spelling of the word, it would never use it.

If we turn to history for guidance we know that Christopher Columbus sailed to America in a British boat, undoubted filled with many REEF KNOTS. This was a time before Americans, a time before the meriam-webster dictionary and a time before your mighty sqaure knot.

                • yes

and if it had not been for america, you would be speaking German right now. and study your history Columbus, sailed for Isabella Queen of spain.

                • Hmmm...

"Christopher Columbus sailed to America" was the phrase I used. I did not state that he sailed FOR America. And If the Germans had won the war the reef knot would be officially known as the "reff knot", and you can bet you bottom dollar that "reff" does not translate to sqaure.

Anyways you say "tomaytoe" and I say "tomartoe". I think we should leave it here.
