  • what you're seeing at the end

is the bottom side of the space shuttle discovery (at the top left of the picture) and the external tank at the bottom of the picture. i watched this live on tv and i thought it was pretty amazing myself.

  • Interesting view

The action (separation from shuttle) happens close to the end.

  • What's the point?

What is the whole point of the shuttle? I'd much rather see the BILLIONS of dollars spent on curing AIDS, or cancer, or fighting Iran or North Korea, or some other worthy cause like that. Sending of crap into space is not worth it!! There are no apparent benefits!! And those of you saying space travel gave us technology, you are full of crap. We could have achieved all those things in 5 years without space travel if we invested all those funds and people into research.

    • The only way...

...we're going to survive as a species is to colonize other planets. That way, no single incident (asteroid, disease, worldwide famine, etc.) can eliminate the entire human race. We have too many eggs in the one basket right now.

Furthermore, most of the communication you enjoy is only made possible by the deployment of satellites throughout the area of gravitational orbit around our little, beautiful, blue ball of dirt.

So, I hardly think shuttle missions are a waste.

Furthermore, there are many chemical reactions that can only happen in a reduced gravity environment - many of which are the chemical reactions necessary to develop new treatments for AIDS, which you were whining about us not wasting enough billions on. (By the way - we've spent more on AIDS research than we have on NASA in the last 20 years, and it's amounted to zero cures.)

See it as a waste if you want. When the ability to colonize other planets, and not be trapped with the millions of starving people here on earth when overpopulation finally exhausts our resources, don't bitch to me when you're stuck here while those of us who believed in the program from the start make our exodus.

    • Your on the right track

point of view - watch the tv series "firefly" & the movie "Serenity" the story isn't as far fetched as one would think.
Also as far as we know the only thing that is infinate is space. The energy the sun uses to support life here will one day be extinguished. The sun loses density and gravity. It's atmosphere begins to grow & grow, turning into a supernova & eventually become a burnt rock in space. In the process of the density loss & expansion, it's atmosphere will expand outward absorbing the closest 4 or 5 planets. If by the Grace of God man hasn't ignorantly killed himself off by then, this will be his doom. Its too bad many ppl waste their minds on hate & destruction rather than on what's most important. Living life in harmony & eternally. Peace ..........

    • Technology

The space program has generated more technology for the good of man than any other single government funded operation.
I would happily vote for any leader that put more money into space program regardless of almost any other issue. (Though that still wouldn't give Bush a pass)
If you want to complain about wasted money, try complaining about incompetence in government.

    • Nice idea, if it were only that easy

Pharmacutical companies spend tons on research of diseases.
They make their money on selling drugs to relieve symptoms of these diseases.
If they were to provide & market a cure, they would seal their own fate.
People would be cured, they'd be unemployed.
Do the math, unfortunatly, it's all about the money. :(

    • I live in Cape Canaveral

So I can say the space program give the USA more than 20,000 good high paying jobs. But I also think it's a waist sending people into space...
