Mercedes-Benz's now-legendary M-Class SUV has been revised for the 2010 model year and beyond. While the refresh doesn't completely alter the look of the vehicle, it does include a redesigned bumper, recontoured headlamps and a larger radiator.

Since the Tuscaloosa, Alabama-built M-Class' introduction in late 1997 for the 1998 model year, families across the globe have flocked to the three-row sports-utility vehicle. The latest generation of the M brought a new top-end V8 model, the ML550, and considerably more aggressive style.

The visual changes with the latest update include restyled front and rear fascias, grille, headlights and smoked taillights. The interior receives upgraded materials along with a two-tone color scheme and new four-spoke steering wheel with integrated shift paddles. New standard and optional equipment has also been added.


Though quality woes plagued the initial vehicles, the M-Class has seen continued success. Since 2008, the ML550 replaces the ML500 and adds a 382 horsepower, 5.5 liter V8 engine. With 391 lb-ft. of torque and a seven-speed automatic transmission, the ML550 is a strong performer.

The entry-level ML-Class is the ML350, which is powered by Mercedes-Benz's ubiquitous 3.5-liter V6. It pumps out 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque.

Standard equipment on all models includes vinyl upholstery, power front seats, 17' wheels, dual zone automatic climate control and wood interior trim. The ML550 adds hated front seats, an automatic-dimming rearview mirror and rain sensing wipers, as well as 18' wheels.

Other equipment includes Mercedes' own occupant protection systems, Pre-Safe and Neck-Pro head restraints, along with roof rails. A new multimedia interface system allows Bluetooth hands-free calling as well as an auxiliary connection for mobile music players. An optional Media Interface allows interacting with devices such as an iPod via the vehicle's steering wheel controls and displays.

MB engineers found a way to improve fuel economy of all M-class SUVs by about 1.5 mpg on average. All Ms feature a four-wheel drive system and a 7-speed automatic transmission and now sport twin exhaust tips.

Major options include the premium package, which features a power sunroof, harman/kardon stereo with satellite radio, a power liftgate and rain sensing wipers.
