Menopause occurs as the ovaries stop producing estrogen, causing the reproductive system to gradually shut down. Technically, menopause refers to the cessation of menstruation (ovulation), as a natural part of a woman's normal aging process. It is a time in a woman's life when physical and psychological changes occur.
The average onset of menopause is 50.5 years of age. Hot flashes and night sweats can be symptoms of menopause and occur in approximately 70% of all menopausal women. Additional symptoms may include headaches, atrophic vaginitis, frequent urinary tract infections, forgetfulness, and cold hands and feet.
Psychological symptoms are often attributed to the menopause, but it is not clear whether these symptoms are caused by the lack of estrogen or are a reaction to the physical symptoms and the sleep disturbances caused by the night sweats. The most common symptoms are poor memory, poor concentration, tearfulness, anxiety, and loss of interest in sex.
