  • No offense but its fairly useless

To those that don't understand the concept, this is like taking a can of beans and putting a label that says corn on it. It just prevents users from viewing the file properly, whatever it may be, it does not prevent people from deleting it, nor does it hide the file so that no one can find it.

If you wish to protect your files on a single user the you should either get a 3rd party software, isolated directories, you may use a cheap trick of compressing your files into a zip or rar and put a password that is longer then 8 characters on the archive.

But if you are serious about security you should create separate accounts with access policies to certain drives and directories. If you have sensitive data on your computer it makes no sense to allow someone to check their email on your account since they can execute a wide variety of malicious stuff. Create a separate user with limited privileges or enable the guest account. I think Microsoft itself released a tool for WinXP users which locks folders WinLock or WindowsLock something of that nature.

Sorry for the very long rumble but I'm seeing more and more videos on metacafe of cheap computer tricks like settings a new password on another account using net user when you're already an admin. And also this method adds programs to the "Open with..." menu that can be very annoying when you are trying to open a valid files such as *.png being opened with a notepad.
