Not the best way...
I tell you a better way:

1. duplicate the layer
2. desaturate the layer beneath
3. activate the mask for the first layer
4. paint the mask with black and white.

for photoshop elements
for photoshop elements (and possibly others) do this:
add hue/saturation layer and take out all saturation.
select hue/saturation layer and use eraser tool to show color in spots you "erase"

pretty nice but it's quite obvious that the picture you used in the beginning of this movie isn't being photoshoped your way, some hairs that are outside the primary shape of the head are also colord. Nice though!

i did this with videos too, but i masked it out. It is better to use that and a blur, guassian blur, in the background. looks cool :)

Great lesson! I'm a Photoshop nut and only scratch the surface of it's capabilities. This tutorial just saved me tons of labour as I did a similar "trick" except mine was labour intensive and certainly not as simple as you have shared with us. Thanks for the tip and thanks for ALL your videos you've been kind enough to share with us all.
