the incline on the tapering funels is greater then the incline of the wooden rails, gravity pulls the mass down the greatest of the competing inclines which results in the greatest incline moving against the weakest.. the funnels go up.

  the wooden rods just get further apart... simple... lots of games like this, i forget what its called but you roll a metal ball up a ramp by spreading the two sides further apart
