  • There's no such thing as "faking" an IP.

    All of the programs that claim to make you anonymous actually just bounce you through a proxy server.

    What does that actually mean?

    It means that your connect to the proxy server, then it sends whatever you were sending directly from it.

    So people see the IP of the proxy server.

    What are some of the reasons not to use a proxy?

    1. Depending on how far away the proxy is your pings can skyrocket up to 1000 ms or more.

    2. If you are using a program that switches proxies in a rotation every few seconds, and are trying to download via P2P at the same time you will wind up losing seeds and peers from your lists constantly.

    3. It doesn't make you anonymous.

    Why do your pings matter? If you are trying to use the proxy for online gaming or for downloading, and you have a ping that high, you will more than likely be considered "timed out" to people trying to connect to you or the server. This means you'll be disconnected since their computers will assume you are no longer connected.

    Why would loses peers and seeds from your list matter? Every person that your torrent program is trying to connect to uses additional bandwidth, especially upstream. If you are constantly dropping people because your ip is changing, you'll have to constantly be trying to reconnect to the same people. Your torrent speeds will be pityful.

    Why doesn't this make you anonymous? Because if you are doing something illegal and the proxy server is in a country that honors the Berne Convention, they will give up your real IP to the authorities.

    ALL SERVERS KEEP LOGS even proxy servers.

    The log simply contains your original IP, and the exact time you connected, as well as the IP you connected to.

    It doesn't matter if you use one of the proxy programs that changes to a new proxy every 2 seconds or not. If someone wants to prosecute you for illegal activities, chances are the proxy will cooperate with the authorities and give up your info.

    Now rather than try and mask who you are to the net, a better idea is to not do ignorant crap that would require you to use a proxy in the first place.

      ...errmmm no, i`m just interested in watching tv episodes from ABC & CW on their websites...which i wouldn`t have though was illegal or ignorant, i live in the uk and don`t want to be beholden to Rupert Murdoch and SKY TV, the 2-3 year wait not withstanding, so before climbing onto your high horse about things consider what people migh want o use this knowlege for.....some of us just wanna watch Veronica Mars, Bones & Lost and not all of us live in the reputed land of the free.
