Dutch Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende was seen actively lobbying at the European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, actively seeking dialogue with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Although emphasizing he is not an official candidate for the post of President of the European Council, (popularly known as 'President of Europe'), Balkenende is believed to be actively campaigning to get this post. Being the political leader of a smaller EU member state and member of the biggest political group in Europe, the EPP, has made him one of the frontrunners in the race for this position.
