How to Launch a Ship
Think about it guys, these ship yards are on rivers, not the ocean, they have to go shallow, a bow or stern launch would put to much of the ship into the water before it leveled out and floated level, side launch enables the ship to be launched into the river that the ship yard sits on. Also the ship is ballisted so that the heaviest part is the beem (the bottom).
By ironmountainman 1262728827pretty close to tipping over too much sometimes!
Why do they do it this way?
Would there not be a more safe way to put a new ship ino the water?
I mean it is spectacular, but could go wrong!
Why risk an accident?
They never tip over. That's because the intelligent people who design and build them know from their design calculations that they can launch them this way.
They don't do it this way because it's fun - they do it this way because experience of centuries of ship building says it's the best way to launch a ship.
I've played this video back several times. If you do the same - play it back many times then look really closely at 1.21 you will see the ship does in fact tip over.
By Asbofsteel 1257417638It's traditional to launch ships this way. Centuries doing it the same way :)
By Svaltus 1267894576and cannot re-erect itself, it`s considered not seaworthy and sold as scrap. The safest way is to use a drydock, but building a drydock is hugely expensive and usually not worth the investment. And most modern ships are too long to be launched headlong, because the hull would break, when the aft is still resting on the wharf, the front is lifted by the water, and the middle isn`t supported by either.
By Kijkertje 1257624206too far, the ship is launched with huge hawsers that tighten and hold the ship upright. Simple.

By Quiintos 1264071550why not have the ramp go further into the water so it doesnt fall off it
By tsmalls3 1263076588The safety manager is always asleep when they launch these ships...hehehe
By h4ck3rm3 1259682479This is what they mean by water displacement. And that was a sharp looking ship for NOAA.
By Moskillz 1258275549That is what they mean by water displacement. And that was a pretty sharp looking ship for NOAA.
By Moskillz 1258275243Oh what a great and informative video whici i saw 1st time in my life . and the views of diffrent cameras are also very good. i will rank this video 5 stars
Very very thanks as this is the first time I see a ship launching, but really a better way to lauch than this kind, very risky
By mailing2rathish 1257295927I am very much interested in cars new
..for the builders. Like letting a child go
when he is all grown up.
Landscape and language at the first launching are Dutch. And I seem to recall the Gerarda was build, and one assumes, launched in Germany.
By Kijkertje 1257179822for launchings. These sideway launchings are more space-efficient, as many wharfs are situated along smaller rivers - as you can plainly see in the first part. Also, there is less risk of the hull breaking this way.
By Kijkertje 1257180141The hull's are very fragile, that's why they don't let these boats anywhere near the sea
By AlfonsoJackson 1258286511Are you still living in that underground condo with Micheal Jackson and Adolph Hitler ?
By AlfonsoJackson 1258286627they were hiding bellow the decks, stowaways, trying to leave mexico and go to any other country in the world.
By bozcro 1257774862Obviously I was watching. I meant that I had never seen a launch done like that.
By ELVIS52 1257352464this my 1st time i see something like this .... amazing thanx
