Funny prank to play on your friends by sending them a pop-up message on their PC and they wont know where its coming from!! I highly recommend this for college kids that have their computer hooked onto the campus network. Also, I recommend this to scare your parents if you have a home network. Its good to use in the office on a coworker, your boss, or on your roomate. I remember when a kid did this to me in high school and now I finally know how to do it! Leave any questions that you have.

  • That service is disabled for a reason

ITS OUTDATED. It looks like the guy in this video has been playing around with TCP/IP 101 stuff. did he really need to post this vid 5 minutes to teach a simple command - net send????

As for it being a prank, its hardly that funny because the origin of the message is displayed in the alert box.

  • IMPORTANT

close your messenger when done because this enables viruses and popups when its open.

try windows magnifier so that you dont have to move things around, to get to it go to start .... programs ..... accessories ..... then go to magnifier ...... hit ok..... then you can set the magnification lvl and other things. cool thing to do when you are making a video or how to's.

you have to disable it yourself.

  • oh,

it will only work on computer that have the windows messenger service turned on. other wise they wont get it.

  • For one, they will

know where the message is coming from. along with the message is the computer name and/or ip address.

  • net send

hiya, I have been doing this for years using windows NT in work. Everyone has their own sign on there, there sign on would be the adress.

however it isnt nessesary to open CMD, just type in run: NET SEND then hit enter. I once had one lad believeing the tech support knew about him accessing pornj on his pc.... his face was a picture, i even sent HR proceedings through to him. it went on for about 2-3hrs before i let on.

    • Nice

Thats pretty solid, thats the stuff that this prank is good for. Even people who know how to use computers pretty well dont know how to use it, its a little complex, but once you get the hang of it, its really solid. Thanks for the story!

    • Sending to an IP out of network

Yeah, I tried that by enabling the messaging but that doesnt work. I think it is because the Windows firewall (or other firewalls) were up...Im still workin on trying to solve that, but try turning the firewalls off (NOTE: Turning off your firewalls puts you at risks that I am not respobsible for.) because I think the firewalls on non-networked computers block messaging. Let me know if you figure it out.

    • Trying to turn off firewall

I have try turning off my firewall, bit still the samo S**t It says the message alias could not be found on the network. I really dont know whats the problem, but if I figure it out, sure i will tell you.

By mrkevca 1168027237 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Maybe...

I read up on it online a little but more...and I found this on wikipedia.

"In order to use the Messenger Service functionality of Windows through the NET SEND command, either by itself or with the use of a third party NetBIOS messaging application, it is recommended that the NetBIOS ports cannot be reached from sources external to the local network. The ports that can be used by the Messenger service are 135, 137, 138, and 139. Many Internet service providers currently block access to these NetBIOS ports over the Internet, helping to prevent spamming even for older unfirewalled clients."

So what I get from this is that pretty much nowadays internet services providers disable the ports through which messenger communicates over the internet so that you cannot receive SPAM through this medium. I assume that there is some way to disable that but probably a lot of work and puts you more at risk for ANYONE to come into your computer.

    • but

yes true , i also searched a little more on net, adn i found this:

When NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected for Systems Management Server Remote Control, the system uses the following ports:

      Port 137 - name resolution
Port 138 - messaging (sending the screen image)
      Port 139 - client sessions

When NetBIOS over NWLink is used, the router must forward Type 20 packets (the packets that provide NetBIOS support).

UDP ports 137 and 138 can be enabled for NetBIOS name resolution using b-node broadcast, but this is not recommended. Instead, a WINS server or LMHOSTS file should be used.

So you just have to enable these ports on your firewall, now im gonna try to figure that out.

By mrkevca 1168035416 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • OK

I have figure it out how to enable netbios ports, but im not sure if im gonna try this, because its risky.

"At its simplest NetBIOS on your LAN may just be a necessary evil. NetBIOS on your WAN or over the Internet, however, is an enormous security risk. All sorts of information, such as your domain, workgroup and system names, as well as account information is obtainable via NetBIOS. It really is in your best interests to ensure that NetBIOS never leaves your network."

    • problem

For some reason when I try to send messages the message comes up "The message alias could not be found on the network" which is confusing because i got the names from using the net view prompt. If you have any ideas let me know.

make sure that you enable messaging on all the machines, and I assume the network is running fine if you can see their names under net view.

You have to not only be on the same network, but each computer has to be in the same workgroup. The video shows you how to change your workgroup.
