  • To crusader and thehate:

Grow up! There are crappy Americans and good Americans. There are crappy Muslims and good Muslims! Judging by both of your stupid comments and lack of empathy for lost lives, it would be my guess you both fall into the "crappy" category!

    • The pilot was incompetent...

Being an idiot pilot who doesn't understand "stall speed" has nothing to do with Muslims anyway!! 99% of Muslims are great people...and the remaining 1% should be buried in the desert with a slice of ham in their mouth.

    • It was pilot error one hundred percent

This pilot was a great pilot. However, after twenty some years flying B-52H's, He began to get show boaty in his manueavers. He broke several FAA regulations involving airhows in the previous airshow. Two of these being that his manuevers took place over the crowd, and two, that his manuevers were beyond the specifications of the aircraft. For those of you who do not know, the B-52 BUFF does not have conventional ailerons. Instead, it has spoilers on the top of the wing, similar to th dive brakes that were on WWII dive bombers. This makes the plane slower to respond, and unable to respond beyond a standard turn. Standard being 40 degrees. You have to realize that these birds are 50 plus years old. This pilot was rumored to have a life goal of rolling the aircraft. The navigators of the squadron had all refused to fly with him, requiring the Cheif Nav to make this flight as well as the ceif engineer. In this one crash, The Air Force lost three of its most expierienced bomber crewman.

  • The Facts

A lot of stupid comments here, the fact is the command pilot was a loose cannon known for exceeding flight limits and should have been grounded. A failure in leadership caused this accident. For more info, see this AF paper analyzing the events leading up to the crash: http://tinyurl com/a7gtz Remove the spaces between tinyurl and com, and replace them with a period.

    • Nice job Aviation!!

I was in the USAF working on F-15's, -16's and -111's and even rookie pilots understand aerodynamics. Don't decelerate in a turn as the inner wingtip loses speed and gravity wins. The pilot was an asshole and it's too bad he killed people much smarter than he was.

The pilot was the cause of the accident, the leadership could have prevented it. The base CO didn't listen to the numerous complaints of junior officers who flew with Lt. Col Holland (pilot) citing his dangerous and irresponsible conduct regarding aeronautical limits of the aircraft.

  • It's a B-52G

At an air show. He was showboating and stalled it. Not much lift in a 60deg bank. B-52s need speed for the controls to respond, so no turning on landing and takeoff.

  • Terrible?

Good riddance of bad rubbish. There were no real human beings there; anyone whose success and honor in life depend upon the death of others could just apparently be human. As for the plane... it could have been a machine designed to make friends instead of enemies worldwide. The doom of the United States is not the one we thought of: No... It's going to be outcome of spreading misery worldwide in the name of freedom. Yes... Poverty is coming, and there will be no way to keep our WMDs working. We deserve it.

  • I was there!!!!!!!

I was there at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Wash. I was a survival instructor there in the 90's when it took place.

Very sad day. But it brought the base personel very close together.

    • Me too!

Alright, I wasn't an instructor...but my husband was. I was walking into the house and that plane went over us. I rememeber thinking, "I can't believe those things can stay in the air like that." The next thing I knew, there was a huge pop from the survival school and the guy who lived next door (MP) came running out saying there was a plane down. I freaked out because I knew it was towards the survival school and I wasn't sure if my husband was alright. It's really was a very sad day...in fact, it was a sad time period. Around the same time we had the shooter at the hospital. It was crazy!

  • Hey u xperts!

Hey jetexperts. Your both wrong. Jets were already flying experimentally at 1941. First there where the V-1 rocket , and then the 262, wich saw action 1944-45.

By 1131527617 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • ROCKET not Jet

V1 was a rocket, not a jet. Big difference. I don't know about the 262. but I assume it was a rocket too.
Not that that has anything to do with this video.

By Nilpez 1131752404 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • get jets

The Messerschmitt Me 262 "Schwalbe" was the first operational jet fighter aircraft built for the Luftwaffe in WW2. Thanks to the daylight precision bombing campaign by the 8th Air Force, the Germans were never able to mass produce the Me 262, which could have turned the tide of the war had the Germans been able to put enough of these into combat. Our piston engine planes would have been outmatched. German rocket and jet technology was far superior to the US in 1943. The first operational US jet didn't fly until 1946.

    • Germans

And even then mostly due to the US recruiting the smartest German engineers who had loyalty only to their work and not any political ideology.
The entire US space program came from German research on rockets, notably Werner von Braun, who is the single most important individual in getting a human being to the Moon.

    • The first jet

The first jet ever was actually british, but when the Battle of Britian started, the engine was sent to America for safe keeping. Before the 262 was operational, we actually had a jet flying at the lake bed that is now Andrews Air Force Base.

    • Skill

Why do they have no business being called an aircrew? Just because they arent sitting inside a computer with a stick. They still have to control those aircraft. Not only that, but the pilots of the BUFFs deserve our never ending respect for the role they played in preventing nuclear escalation during the Cold War. Those birds carried nukes at all times, and their crews were on call for months at a time. And I almost forgot, for being a crap plane, that aircraft carries more armanent than almost anything in the world, and carries more jamming equipment than some foreign military bases, and a ton more than any fighter squadron

the aircraft was in great flying shape, the pilot flew it like it was a fighter and it fell out of the sky. when and aricraft flies sideways the lift is generated by the sides of the aircraft, the b-52 creates no lift on its side

By cowboyzombie 1139961385 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Leave aerodynamics to the experts

You have no idea wtf you are talking about. It is not the "side" that generates lift in a turn (only if the plane is fully 90 degrees on its side). If it is less than 90 degrees roll, then the wings still produce lift, albeit to a lesser degree.

The B-52 uses spoilers for its roll control instead of ailerons. At high bank angles and low airspeed, the spoilers are somewhat ineffective.

Go read the link provided in the other post, it will tell you about thepilot of this plane and his bad flying habits.

There were 4 men on the plane (listen to the audio of the clip)...

And the pilot was a "cowboy" who took too many chances in the air. Other men in his wing would not fly with him. As a result, the base CO was in the right seat when the plane crashed. A stupid, childish mistake by and arrogant officer who thought he was above the rules of aeronautics.

    • Only 3 on board

I don't know where you got your info, but it is wrong. The pilot and the base CO and one other officer were killed. The pilot had alienated so many men in the wing that many refused to fly with Lt. Col. Holland. The base CO, as a vote of confidence, flew with Holland at a practice run for an air show to be held the next day.

    • Everybody is wrong here

I just pulled this from the accident report.

"On the 24th of June 1994, Czar 52, a B-52H assigned to the 325th Bomb Squadron, 92d Bomb Wing, Fairchild Air Force Base, WA, launched at approximate 1358 hours Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), to practice maneuvers for an upcoming airshow. The aircrew had the planned and briefed a profile, through the Wing Commander level, that grossly exceeded aircraft and regulatory limitations. Upon preparing to land at the end of the practice airshow profile, the crew was required to execute a "go-around" or missed approach because of another aircraft on the runway. At mid-field, Czar 52 began a tight 360 degree left turn around the control tower at only 250 feet altitude above ground level (AGL). Approximately three quarters of the way through the turn, the aircraft banked past 90 degrees, stalled, clipped a power line with the left wing and crashed. Impact occurred at approximately 1416 hours PDT. There were no survivors out of a crew of four field grade officers. " Also you guys are confusing the Squadron Commander with the Base CO There is a difference between Squadron, Wing, and Base Commanders. Having grown up on and around Mountain Home Air Force Base, and Hill Air Force Base, I understand this.

As I recall, if it is the same incident, it was a practice touch and go before an airshow. I remember reading that the crew on the plane were all instructors for various positions in the plane from pilot to other systems and that they had been repremanded in the past for showboating.

    • Only the pilot, Lt. Col Bud Holland was ...

Several men in Holland's wing refused to fly with Holland for several stunts that were similarly as dangerous as the one that got him and the base CO and one other officer killed. The base CO flew with Holland as a show of confidence. Holland was never officially reprimanded, even though his conduct was called into question by several officers in his wing on many different ocassions.
