By hofnik 1170937683 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeum, I have an issue. whenever I go to fix the levels, it rips out all of the facial details and fuzzes it. I used the same number for the levels that you did, and its a big picture too. so what can I do to get over this?
By PastDarwin 1169029844 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou will have to play with the sliders - different pictures call for different settings and they cannot be predicted, I'm afraid.
By Galey 1169029914 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeim just curious, but would these steps work in Jasc's PaintShopPro as well? i may actually use it for something like this, i love Sin City...
I'm sorry, I don't know anything about PSP, never opened the program - you'll have to try and see for yourself.
By Galey 1169029681 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThats awsome! When I'm finished getting moved in, I wanna use this and put it as my door ID
By HurryHarry 1169029563 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethis effect looks wonderful!!
i' ve been a couple hours trying to do this... not as good as the one in the example, but well.
Hey there,

Wow Sin City=Great movie.....and so is this tutorial....
By beiersdorf 1169029346 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHey. I tired using this tutorial and I think there might be some steps missing?? I dunno. Im still sort of photoshop retarded. I think its a lot of fun and this is a really cool tutorial. I'd love to be able to figure it out and use it!!
By ticuntuast 1169029246 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedont think there are steps missing
By numashdei 1169029303 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSCORE! The Sin City look is just about the most awesome thing I've ever seen, and I've been amazed ever since I saw the movie. Thanks dude *bows*
By Ittikus 1169029196 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis was the most fun tutorial I've found in along time.
By aikenartifct 1169029166 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWow, thanks for this tutorial! I myself have been playing with the same stuff you used to get this, but somehow could not get it right..thanks
By crashband2 1169029128 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeit's not the same as in the movies - i believe it looks like what was used in the actual comics, but I'm no expert there... if you want something more like the movies you might need to recolor some parts or use the effect only on parts of the image. this tutorial is not the only way of doing things, it's just one way to get a nice effect, the rest is up to you.
This Tut is flipping awesome!!!
By MarieCurie 1169029051 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeawesome tutorial !!!! i made my desktop and then after i did i was browsing around saw ur tutorial, looked at your tutorial and i was woah! we do it alike! except i didn't try to make it sin city like i thought that was funny well anyways very cool tutorial :)
By Dontcompl 1169029021 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNice one, i like it, am thinking of using it when i make my avater. But one question, jsut beeing looking at the trailers etc and this isn't the same effect as them. Am i missing something? The best i can think of is that your only suposed to use this effect on their clothes and do the write gray scale?
I've had so much fun with this. Thanks for sharing. :3

By roger.keats 1169028832 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI faved this because I loved it so much. Thank you again for making this! I had so much fun!!!! Couldn't get the rain to work correctly at first, so I lessed the opaqueicity(sp?!?) when I was doing the overlay of gray, and lessened the amount of noise...then It came out great. ^_^ I also had to tweak the katana a bit, but after a bit of work that came out great too! I love you ^_^
By dodialf 1169028656 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI wanted to say, thank you for making this tutorial! I loved it! It helped me get through my first experience with photoshop, and I actually made an ID using this tutorial (and may I say I love how it turned out!

i liked this a lot!! i'll give it a try..
really simple and very effective
Gonna have a go at this.
By Terranigma 1168973554 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehad problems with the rain as well; eventually i used a third layer of rain, skewed it even less and added a gradient to compensate for some of the darker parts of the picture.
guess the original image wasn't that good to begin with.
Great tutorial. That rain trick sure is nifty.
By CusedMyHeart 1168964990 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAnyone knows what font is used for the caption?
By AloneInKyoto 1168964819 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFound it, Comic Sans.
By CusedMyHeart 1168964864 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removegreat tute, thanks a lot!
By JustForOneDay 1168963417 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI love this technique!!
By HeroLover 1168963112 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removecan´t seem to get the rain like the example either... anyone got a response?
By Whatsthematt 1168962845 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI reduced the fill of the first layer to about 40%. Notice that even thought its 50% zoom, this is the size I like..
Of course... i probably could have added a layer mask on one or both of the rain images and painted with a grey brush on the body in order to achieve the same result.
Just another thought!
Ya but the rain just shows up behind the person, yet.. It should show up as if its raining al around .. If u know what i mean.
By Vangelises 1168964210 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removecant you put the rain layer on top of the person and set the mode to overlay?, just a thought
By ArticIce 1168964676 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCall it an..."Executive creative decision" The three areas I could have used work on were the hand, rain, and the eyes. I used a grainy pic to begin with.
By HymnToBeer 1168964297 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI have a lot of problems creating the sin city rain. When I put the layer in Vivid Light and I adjust the levels i can´t get the right effect. Any Ideas?
By ShakenSqueez 1168963199 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei make a selection for colors in the rain layer and erase the white. Maybe is not the best solution, but it works.
By OsamaDontLaden 1168962899 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removea few things. Whenever Im doing the rain, one i motion blur, it becomes transparent on its own. Then when i try to skew it, it says "could not transform because The Initial Bounding rectangle was empty." whats that mean and how do i fix?
By CellularSounds 1168962795 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethats pritty cool.. Now just to add colour to sertin places
By JacksBack 1168962715 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI do not know how to add the black background color without breaking all the image :(
Could you help me?
Still haven't figured out where the lasso tool is to make the bubble. Very new to Photoshop.
By PastDarwin 1168962537 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe elliptical tool is under the top left button of the toolbar. The polgonal selection tool is 2nd from the top left of the tool bar.
By Casylina 1168962584 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHi.. I don't succeeded in rain part...
Can you show me an example of your levels values ?
same as HB ... rain ripples...
level values examples?
Mine looked well until i merged the layers and it threw in a bunch of extra rain. Not sure what happened there.
By HurryHarry 1168962260 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI'm going to try tonight mine, great tutorials btw, been watching the site for the last 3 days, and finally decided to become a member of this community.
By LittleBigMan 1168962205 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removenot a bad result. Mine came out a bit dark though
By ChaomeiFan 1168962145 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHey THX it really works!
Cool to learn some new tricks.
the rain comes out too dark for me, what settings did you use?
By beiersdorf 1168955376 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCool tutorial... Thanks!
By Tipp-EX 1168955295 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is awesome. Thanks for the easy to follow guide.
One question: The rain is tough. On mine and the ones posted here it looks like we are getting a lot more rain droplets than in the example. I've tried changing the resolution on the image from my original 2048x3072 down to 1700x1200, 900x600, etc. Nothing I do seems to reduce the amount of rain produced. However, if I use your sample image it comes out looking just fine. I think it might be due to the behavior of the "Vivid Light" setting. My images tend not to be stark black/white contrasts. Could this be why?
Thanks for any advice, I would love to nail down the effect.

By Galey 1169038304 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNice job guys
By numashdei 1168955209 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAwesome tutorial buddy. Thanks much!
By ticuntuast 1168955154 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHey,
Thanks for the tutorial - I found the hardest part getting the rain looking like you did. I ended up by adjusting the levels of the final jpg image to make it all look a little more inky.
I recommend using an image that has a lighter background than your head otherwise it just won't look as good. Oh, and the font is called Comic (who would have thought!)
Thanks for the tutorial!
nice i thirst thought of the movie but this is nice to
By Ittikus 1168350662 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBy the way, the Threshold effect does the EXACT same thing much mor easily.
By aikenartifct 1168350541 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis article looks like a noir comic book, but it doesn't really look like the Sin City movie...
By Q7Lova 1168350219 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove..they should get that guy who did those badass batman comics Frank Miller.
By crashband2 1168350425 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveGuess what Sin City was before it was a movie! Think hard...
By Sequoia^ 1168350352 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removesomeone should make a noir comic book...and they could name it 'Sin City' just like the movie!
Can you taste the sweet sweet sarcasm my chippies?
q7 it is the tutorial of the sin city book, not of the movie.
By Galey 1169027828 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI swear, I misread the title and thought I was about to learn how to use Photoshop to create "Sim City"-style graphics, complete with little boxy houses and a rampaging, lego-like Godzilla. D'oh!
By quantum-ball 1168350140 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt is a very simple effect but good to know nonetheless.
By monkeyislfun 1168350076 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe Real trick, is doing this in Video, NOT frame by Frame :-D
By roger.keats 1168350042 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei think in the movie they used some other effetcs ^^
By Galey 1169027773 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveVery Simple, yet produces awesome effects.
By dodialf 1168349893 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAww I thought it read "Sim City".
By queryentry 1168349787 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefor the controversy... I will publish it later :p
By Galey 1169026818 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI saw that too. I was curious how photoshop was going to create sim city effects.
