Imagine...no launch control, no traction control, no down-shift button, no anti-lock brakes, no paddle shifters, no sequential shifters!!! Possibly 1000 horsepower and an old fashion H pattern shift mechanism. These were true drivers. I can't see Alonso or Schumacher driving the cars in this clip as well as Gilles and Arnoux did, yet...they most likely could have driven today's F1 machines as good as Alonso and Schumacher.

I'm 17, i've been watching NASCAR, F1, IRL, CART (or champ w/e), ALMS, sedan racing, basically anything since I was around 6 or 7. I have never seen such fantastic racing in my life. The thing that makes this clip so great is it features Gilles, and the fact that Gilles and Arnoux trade the lead back and forth. At the very instant it seems like one of them has the lead fairly secured, the other takes it from them. The current state of F1 is S**t , the racing boring because the trailing car can not follow closely enough for an extended period of time like in this clip because of over heating issues, and because of the rules which try to artificially create good racing. The field is also much smaller, which reduces the amount of passes per race. Then again, nothing is as great as a F1 standing start. NASCAR is terrible compared to this. period

This is why he is still revered to this day by everybody who knows
something about racing. Even some NASCAR fans.
Gilles epithomizes COURAGE and FEARLESNESS and FAIRNESS in everything he did.
And he didn't take himself seriously, he was a simple man, but driven.
No sissy champion of today comes close, especially NOT that german.

That's what REAL racing between REAL drivers looks like. Anybody else's heartbeat go up?

We all miss Gilles, a charismatic genious... and Arnoux was no slouch either...

Must be him !!!! The best driver from around the world...came from Quebec, Canada....and died in his FOrmula one years ago...still in our heart here in Quebec!

I don't see NASCAR is a great event, the old F1 is much better, the car is as hard to handle as NASCAR, but the track, the technic, is more complex to drive, the present F1 driver is far more lucky than those who drove before 1980s. hail to the heros

C'mon now, you can't see battles like that anymore, and with all the fake clips you find nowadays I found this remarkable. This is how racing is supposed to be: two men fighting to the end... F1 S**ks today....

I have been a fan of NASCAR but these two were genius on the track.

who is the driver of the renault? anybody knows?

The guy in the Ferrari is Gilles Villeneuve, father of Jacques Villeneuve. For those who expect a crash... Gilles Villeneuve died in a crash during a Grang Prix in 1981. He was a hell of a driver.

for normal people they would expect a crash to get the thrill, but for racing fans, this is one of a kind race.

no i am no grand pirx fan by any means, but that was amazing! some awesome driving, they controlled thoese cars like scaletrix! awesome!

What a memorable video. I remember watching that race on TV. The French GP of 1979. JP Jabouille of France won that race to give Equipe Renault V6 Turbo their first ever F1 win. Arnoux tried to make it 1-2, but the courageous Villeneuve fought him hard. Like Gilles has always done. Following his career in F. Atlantic and then coming into F1 w/ McLaren I believe. He was my favorite of that era. Ayrton Senna kind of stepped up after that and I am Brazilian - American so naturally I became a fan of his. I can remember reading Euro race results from British publications about Ayrton Senna da Silva winning all kinds of races in UK. German zillion-time world champion would've never been successful in the late 70's and early-to-mid 80's. German only saw success when Senna left us. All his records should be Senna's.

I dare any of you nascar P***ys to try that, keep going round in circles you over paid trained monkey's!!!!
