ffdshow is a video filter (not a codec!) to decode basically any video and their sounds. It's pretty resource-saving, so on older PCs or laptops it works much faster than any codec, but it is advised to be used on newer PCs also. Quality, speed, and effects also are much better with ffdshow. So after all it can apply effects (realtime of course) to videos: for example Normalizing is a pretty useful one, because it amplifys the sounds as loud as they can be, without quality loss - on laptops it is VERY useful. When problems with videos occur, I always suggest ffdshow to try. And of course it is free. The only question I have, why doesn't everyone use it already?

      First of all, you must download an *.exe file to install - you can download it anywhere as it is free. You can find newer builds then the link in the video, for example by free-codecs.com:

  • It can work...but

    If you already have a fair number of codecs installed, then it can get confused and I've seen it play the audio way out of sync. And can be a real pain to remove - always create a restore point! Better to use VLC from videolan.org - simple player with a lot of codecs built in.

      What are you talking about? What you are describing are codec packs. This is not even one codec, but more like a video filter. It doesn't get confused with other codecs: in ffdshow's settings screen you can override everything, you can set it up to play only what you want, or to play every type of stream. But that just never happens... Audio and video out of sync? That's most improbable, because the same stuff is decoding both... Uninstalling is also not a problem, because it's only one piece of software. I've advised this to many of my friends, and no one had problem had a problem when uninstalling it . (They tried only for updating by the way....) The ease of uninstallation is one of ffdshow's benefits.
