- Happened to me
I did a gear up landing in a Piper Arrow. OK, wasn't by accident, but I was amazed at how amazingly straight the plane dragged onto the runway. Sadly, I landed at the *intersection* of the two runways for the airport (HIO) and closed the airport for a few hours until my plane could get cleared. And yes, I flew that plane again, the first ferry flight to bring it back from the repair shop back to the home field.

They have a saying in flying with regard to gear-ups: there are those that have, and those that will. I just changed states.

Even though as a pilot, I have undergone training on how to do emergency landings and all, still doing it in real situation is very different.

- The real story
this pilot did a good job of landing, but the truth is that he took off over gross and blew a tire which destroyed the hydralic system. Ignoring standard procedures has caused too many accidents like this one.

This is a hawker aircraft and the center of the aircraft has a long skid rail for just this type of situation when the gear wll not come down.
The flames probably came from the lower sump areas that are right at the wing root.
And no one was hurt, Except for the poor Hawker.1187011- 0

That was very usual during the second world war when enemy fire had damaged the gear. But then they often landed on fields and not airports.

Good point, I just want to point out that landing on dirt is much more dangerous because the plane can flip over due to the uneven ground. Runways are much smoother and the plane slides much easier instead of digging into the soft ground.

Fuel is highly explosive in vapour form, and much less so in liquid form. Simply put, it'd be much more likely to explode if it had near bingo fuel. The plane didn't explode simply because it's fuel tank was tough enough

I am a tower controller and also a pilot, much of what was posted earler is very true, but we train so many times over and over its almost routine, whats not routine is your heartbeat when is not a drill. BTW the crash crew is on scene, you can see the trucks positioned at different points along the runway

You are a pilot and controller? Only the airlines and busn. pilots flying jets will train this type of maneuver over and over. Not private pilots. You can't be both.
The guy talking is the idiot. First he said the pilot is afraid to land, I don't know how he would know that, then he follows that with an other moron type statement that the plane is catching fire even though the pilot used most of the fuel. He not only contradict himself, but tells the world he does not know what he is talking about and should just be quiet.
Right at the end of the belly landing, puffs of black smoke and flames came out of either side of below the cockpit. Did the entire plane explode?
