Sorry, I just rated it one star - Metacafe's rating system isn't initially intuitive, and it locked me out of modifying it. Guess the programmer was on the "wrong" sort of drugs...

This was controlled by a midi controller.

Once you code what it looks like for a hammer to move, you can just play the song on any midi keyboard and it will receive the midi signal and trigger the animation.

i'm not saying it's easy, but if i had a 30-40 hours, i could replicate this with my Alesis Fusion and my computer.

after the first one, i could do a million videos like this, and each would take only 3-4 hours.
