95% of people never bother to modify their default disk settings and end up consuming a LOT more disk than needed. So, here are 4 easy steps that can quickly free up 10-20% of your system disk's space. Voice narration is included.
Indeed these are rather simple steps to follow.
However, best results are obtained when done on a computer that has been used for at least 6 months, so all the garbage can build up. I do these steps on every single computer I touch, be they a friend's computer or work computer. All in all I figure I've checked/modified over 100 systems, and maybe 1 or 2 of these have had any modifications along the lines of what I showed in the video. It is quite surprising that Microsoft would still be using fixed percentages rather than proportional ones that vary based on the size of the disks. Their estimates would be fine had we all still be using 10GB disks, but as you know that's no longer the case for most people. And now with the advent of 750GB to 1TB disks, how much space will be gobbled up then?
You can add up the theoretical savings as follows:
10% + 12% + RAM size + (474MB).
In my 50GB disk example (w/ 1GB RAM), 12.5GB is the theoretical limit, so the 10GB obtained was not far from that. However, if you can save even a few GB that should still make most people happy.
For a brand new computer that hasn't had a chance to build up all the waste files, savings won't be as much, but it's still good to modify the disk settings for future savings. The biggest reclaimation would be on the system disk, although you may still see something on the other disks.
Have fun with all your newfound space! :-)

By suryadev 1170266792 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThen the effort was all worth it. :-)
I'd actually spent considerable time on it with all the editing, transitions, etc. I'd done a prior version which got rejected by Metacafe under their new mobile phone guidelines, so I had to redo the whole thing from scratch using another program for easier visibility.
It's actually taken me a month to get this out, so I cringe when I see others posting stuff which appeared to take them 30 seconds to shoot with little to no editing.
I know most of the stuff that was showen, apart from the hibernate thing (Zomg!), but this is a really good video.
I have 500Gb...so no problem here :D.
Nice video.
turn off the system restore completely. I've been doing IT work for almost 8 yrs and if it's something I can't fix, I'm sure as hell system restore won't be able to fix either. Most of the time, running system restore after a serious problem just screw things up even more

i have the older version of windows so i couldn't find the "system recovery" tab you were talking about. any suggestions as to where it's located on the 2000 version? thanx!
By jojokim 1172011424 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf I recall, the first version of "system restore" was included with Win ME, and then again when the enterprise & home OS merged into Win XP. So, it seemed to be targetted to the "home" user stream rather than for enterprise users.
If you don't find it in the control panel or as a tab within "My Computer" properties, then it's most likely not part of Win 2K. I personally turn it off completely and haven't had any real issues because of not using it.
do you have anything instructional videos like this for apple users?
By jojokim 1172008140 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSorry, not at this time. Actually, the OS X platform is a LOT less screwed up than the Windows platform, so I don't know how Mac users could benefit. *smile*

By jimsta 1170674100 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removejust add this other step in your video.
delete the files locate here:
c:/documents and settings/your name/local settings/temp
here is where all the rar, zip temporaly decompres the files before you extract to specific location. also several other temp files.
one important note, you need the unlocker program because some files are hard to delete.
however I didn't want to complicate things any further than I had to, and as you said some files are locked so this would have incurred confusion
By blazercomp 1170780400 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIve just bought a hole new com with 1 Tb
Just bought it for 35.000 DDK (Danish Kroners)
Thats 6986.05 In USD
That seems awfully high for a system with a 1TB capacity. You should have been able to get that disk space (2x500GB) for under US$700.
By blazercomp 1170780504 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebut paying 10X the price that we would pay is not entirely sensible. It's cheaper if you were to just fly to the US and buy from there. You could visit DisneyWorld and Hollywood on the same trip and still have US$5,500 left.

By Fstino86 1170425201 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveVery informative. I already knew and performed some of these actions - but after following your instructions I saved another 10%! Thank you!
By RoboGeek 1170337558 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI love to see testimonials so people can see I'm not making this stuff up. Thanks!
By blazercomp 1170392388 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou kinda cheated by filling up your recycle bin and making it look that you freed up more space than you actually did.
By anthosm 1170332615 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMost people don't bother to empty their recycle bins so they can easily fill up over time. It's the same thing with the windows temp directory...you could probably free up a few hundred megs just by clearing out garbage from there
By bramw 1170342662 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI used to work in systems support and often found people with their recycle bins loaded up quite heavily. It's not uncommon to see thousands of files in these. People can get lazy about stuff like this. And, Microsoft put in a 10% default limit on this so some people will undoubtably reach that after some time if you give them that option.
By blazercomp 1170781022 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI have seen this video before....Perhaps someone has copied it and posted it for producer rewards as their own? When it belongs to someone else....
I think Metacafe should look into this
That first version was mine too. This is newly redone with more clarity for smaller screens. Thanks for your concern. :-)
By blazercomp 1170325860 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveEvery time I need to get on the net, I have to reboot my computer. I am using both Norton and Zone Alarm virus protection. Do you think that has anything to do with it?
Thanks for your great info.
One of my friends also had a recent version of Norton Internet Security software installed, and it nearly killed his system performance. Once we removed that his system sped up considerably. You could try to remove Norton and see what effect it has.
