I found this works better with unmodified images, being original images direct from a digital camera. you can usually check if the file is original from the exif data by getting the image file properties and clicking advanced.

If you have an LCD monitor lean it backwards (look upwards towards your monitor) and you can see the results before he makes the changes... I'm not saying what he does is fake but it looks like its already done a lot of it...
