Sugar (a carbohydrate) is dehrydrated with concentrated sulfuric acid. Since a carbohydrate was once considered just hydrated carbon, if you remove the water, carbon would be left over. The acid rips the water out of the sugar and the heat generated by this reaction causes the water to turn to steam. A black mass of carbon is produced.
THAT LOOKED LIKE ME TAKING A S**t ....

By uber_gabzz 1206327156 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedid this as demonstration for us in our chemistry class. Everything was the same except the black stuff went straight up about 10 inches
By rcsucka 1170749941 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt curved to the right. Thats some conservative sugar...
By Rugburn 1170631014 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebecause it's large and black is it also conservative?

By azotyp1 1201001799 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removejust a question, can you eat it or no? just a question, please respond
By Bazil stagg drummond 1200021163 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeno, you cant eat it. the sulfuric acid still lingers in side the black stuff [carbon]
what happened was that the sulfuric acid broke bonds between the sugar molecules so that the C12H22O11 separates and the H and O turn to H2O and Carbon is the black stuff.
Maybe in a couple years you can eat it after teh sulfuric acid dries up but if you eat carbon youll just end up shitting it out.
its the same as eating the black stuff on the tailpipe of your car
could something be added as a colorant instead of black?
yes. take the black S**t put intesne heat and pressure until it turns to diamond. then add various metas such as Cu(II)Cl2.2H2O to make it green blue!!
By stewiesimpson 1205469326 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI liked more experiment with chromium, called pharaon's snakes...I'd say it's safer cuz there is no acid used. (for those who know I'd like to see it again, as I have no longer acces to labs:( )
