  • From the Swacreek at Abermain to Hill 60

I am 72 and as a boy lived on and swam in the creek at Abermain where Mines Surveyor TW Edgeworth David discovered coal in 1886. Later at 57 he was a Lt Colonel in the Tunnelling Battalion. He played a major part in the most fantastic feat of arms to that date. Tunnelling under and intalling 933,200 pounds (nearly 500 tonnes) of high explosive below the German trenches on the Messines Ridge. !0,000 German soldiers were killed in the horrific blast. An Abermain Mine Surveyor Lt. Clarrie Jefferies was wounded in the attack after the blast later winning a posthumous Victoria Cross for an infantry attack on a German pillbox. My first girlfriend came from Hill 60 in Kurri Kurri across the road from where I now live. Many of those miners in that bloodthirsty engagement came from the South Maitland Coalfields around Kurri Kurri. The Edgeworth David Museum is in Deakin Street on Hill 60 beside the Kurri Kurri High School. Jefferies Park is in Abermain as is the Mining Memorial on the Main Road beside Swamp Creek with a concise history of Professor Sir T.W. Edgeworth David's discovery and story. I commend this historic mining area to you. You are welcome to come and see the 50 beautiful murals depicting the mines and social events in and around Kurri Kurri.

    • Col Maybury???

Hey, any relation to an old mate of mine, Kerry Maybury, who I believe may live on Hill 60 in Deakin Street Kurri Kurri. It is about 40 years since I last saw Kerry M. If Kerry is still around I would appreciate the nod at bhugg@netspeed.com.au.

      Cheers
