- heres a quicker tip for you....
  Why make it so hard. just sit down on a chair cutting the onion, then you wont get the gas in the eyes.

Take it from me, I've been a prep-cook for many years, and if I wasted that much food I'd be in big trouble...look how much onion is just thrown away. Seriously, all you need to do is make sure your knife is nice and sharp, and not serrated!
The more crazy stuff you do with the onion the more it's gonna squirt, the more it squirts the more you get in your eyes. And for god's sake, wash your hands before you touch your face!

  Why someone marked this down I have no idea. He is absolutely correct. When you mash the onions with a dull or serrated knife you force out the gasses that make you cry.

The truth...
The developed gas reacts with water to create sulfuric acid, (ps: you have water in youÂ´r eyes..)
Have something moist nearby and problem solved. Wet towel around neck, wet knife/onion, running water close by, etc...
Cutting out the "bulb" might help because its the juiciest part of the onion.

Oh and don`t use a serrated blade on an onion...
(or a file knife on bread... or a spoon on a fish...

there is an easier way
Put few matches between your lips from the wood-end side (The heads should be positioned outwards). That is it. Cut the onion however you like :)
