I hook them up for various cities... we just mount the button on the pole without any connection. Most all are "dummie" buttons that give the person who presses them a warm fuzzy feeling.

I was once at a 3 way stop where the driver said get out and hit the walk button or it won't change! I thought they were trying to ditch me but I hit the button 3 times and it changed almost instatly. And I was back in the car!

Lots of car drivers who come to intersections with pedestrian buttons jump out of their cars, run over to push the button, then run back to their cars. By the time they return to their car, the light has changed. So it's a more or less useless trick . . . though interesting.
