  • Touching the paint or windows

is really stupid, the car is on rubber tires and is not grounded, you have to touch the gas pump, something metal and something not painted, which is what she did, she touched the nozzle and discharged the static from her body to the nozzle.
You can thank the EPA for this new problem which is happening more and more, it comes from oxygenating the fuel in the gas stations, they add oxygen to the fuel to get them to burn cleaner, and they are now more easily ignited by static. Never heard of this problem prior to 1998. Now it is happening more and more.

    • static come from the seat

more than 50% of these accident are becoz of they get back to their seat and 'recharge', then immediatly touch the nozzle to release the static.

  • very close!!

she's a very lucky girl! empty tank, with fire on the filler!!! Think I would have run away!!! And how on earth did that fire start? Static discharge??

but good thing she took out the nozzle or else it would just keep filling up

she was lucky it didnt create a flamethrower. someone must have hit the emergency kill switch

    • note

if she didn't took out the nozzle, the gas would just have kept running into the tank and nothing would have happened

      just like now btw =)

    • Yep.

The static discharge from getting in and out of the car. MythBusters did test this one when doing the cell phone thing (phones won't start a fire, static can.) If she had discharged elsewhere on the car it probably would not have happened.

It's from her sweater dude. She rubs her sweater then touch the gas pump.

    • Sweater

I knew what was going to happen from the moment I saw her. That's why I was hoping she'd just take off the sweater - it'd make her safer in the long run. I keep re-watching it, and she never takes it off. So sad.

would have exploded like a bomb.Gas FUMES are more dangerous than the gasoline itself.

    • Contrary to popular belief

Actually, the “empty tank full of fumes & exploding” theory has been disproved. The problem is, the richness of the mixture in the tank. In order for any fire to occur (hence leading to an explosion), you have to have three key factors. 1. Heat. 2. A fuel source. 3. Enough oxygen to sustain combustion. A tank like that will burn at the opening (indicated by the continuing glow reflection in the fuel lid cover). Now, blast pure oxygen into the tank while it is burning, and you’ll have your explosion, but chances are this one will burn itself out as the mixture gets richer as it moves down the fill spout.

    • With NO gas your car can still catch on ...

if your car is on Empty and you open it and touch a rust spot or somethin and there static (there usually is rust around the filler somewheres - just normal to have e.g. mostly on older cars) but... even without the filler - just opening it could start a tunnel fire -- like a bursting flame comming out - till it fades away. (seen it before - and its happened on my 4 wheeler) - in nascar - that S**t happens all the time, you just cant see the flame - thats y they usually spray around the filler hole before the car takes off - the fuel just burns soo clear and crisp!!! - cant believe no one said anything about that! -- and yeah - fuel is too oxygenated also - makes it pretty unsturdy outside of the gas tank. - dont run on E because its been known for gas tanks to expand due to high temps and fumes trying to escape ( try this - put some gas in a gas can and make sure its sealed tight - set it out in the sun for a day or two and you will notice that its expanding a hell of alot - mostly due to oxygenation ) carefull though - it might explode so do it out in the country or somethin LOL

if u wanna see fire from a gas tank in person if u never have - get some liquid dreno - a big moth ball (the ones that are about 2'' in diameter and hollow - cut it in half - put liquid dreno in it - use scotch tape (peels away by itself when wet easily) and make a few of em - throw em in a gas tank (not recomended to be your friends or enemies vehical!!!! - just a junkyard car thats like halfway full of gas - new or old) --- anyways drop them babies in there and BAMMMMM!!!

it will blow the whole rear end off LOL - it works because ive tried it! haha - just a chemical reaction.

    • It's static discharge. There's already a...

it has nothing to do with what ever theory you mentioned. It's static discharge. Look at how she was rubbing her hand against her sweater. Most of the cases happened to women drivers, coz they have a habit of getting inside the car (where there's a lot of static material) after putting nozzle inside the tank inlet.
Also note that she didn't touch the body of the car before attempting to hold the nozzle.
Typically men would wait by the car, resting their body against the car, this helps discharging static safely.

in the UK auto filling pumps are banned for cars, so you cant walk around and build up static.

  • Focus on what you're doing!

Why was she sitting in her car while the nozzle was pumping anyway? This is a peeve of mine. People should not be multitasking at the pump. It takes only a few minutes vs. risking a terrible accident. Just last week I watched a gas nozzle pop out of the car in front of me while the lady was in her car chatting on her phone and writing something down. Luckily the flow of gas shut off when the nozzle hit the ground but not before it spewed gas all over. They should remove the little catch that keeps the trigger locked on the handle. Small inconvenience for a lot more safety.

  • Most of you are missing the point entire...

Yes, the phenomenon of the nozzle and tank igniting is freaky and scary, but the impressive part of the video is this chick managing to keep her wits about her instead of fleeing. She rock's.

By CrkOfDawn 1145703884 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • this is correct!

The problem is Static discharge. Too solve that problem, you can crab outside the door or the roof so you discharge it there before you grab the fuel handle.
There is a smarter thing. And that is to have it in the same way we in Norway has it. Because when you fuel here you have to hold the fuel handle all the time or it doesn't get anything out in the tank. So you never get this problem with static discharge. Something else i picked up, i think it's from the firemen. When you get a static discharge. and it takes fire. You should not take the fuel handle out of the car. You may spil out more on the car and other places, so it can get more dangerus. blablabla

  • MAD STATIC

If you look at the girl getting out of the car, she first fixes her probably nylon/polyester sweater with her hands. a common thing a lady will do when she gets out of a car to cover the tummy. us ladies know about this and immediatly she created static and connected with the gas pipe..LUCKY GIRL

Smoking near at gas starions is forbidden, yet they allow people to operate fuzzy sweaters that create static electricity ? Some people are misjudging the danger of wearing clothes. I would have taken the nozzle out naked.

  • REASON

the fire started coz she was wearing that sweater, moved on the seat of the car = static electricity, she must have had rubber souled shoes so the charge stayed on her until she touched the metal on the pump filler, than wham it caught fire

the looks of this videoit looks like the woman has fueled a small amount n then released it n then started fueling again. this causes pressure to build up in the tank and id say that something as simple as static electricity has caused the fire or possibly she still had her car running n the engnition on which can also caise this.

  • Car Fuel Fire.

Static electricity, absolutely. Don't get back in a car when refueling, then slide out, then monkey with your sweater before you grab the nozzel. All kinds of static there.

By skeebo 1135828674 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • As stated below

it is static electricity. If you get back into your car you must touch a metal part of the vehicle again before touching the nozzle. And, contrary to popular belief, cell phones do not start fires at gas pumps. I'm not a cell phone freak like some but Myth Busters on Discovery channel proved all of this.

  • car fire

i drive a gas tanker. what has been stated about station fires is quite accurite. Sunoco did a study that showed the greatest cause of station fires is women. they have a tendency to start fueling then return to sit in their warm car. when they slide across the seat to exit the vehicle, they build a massive static charge, then discharge when they touch the fuel nozzle. there are other causes and reasons, that's just the greater percentage.
