  • history lesson

It is a miracal that such a small number of the passengers died. Its a shame that this ended an era of air travel which should be brought back.Air ship travel would be like being on a cruise ship drifting obove the earth.
one other thing it was not the hydrogen that cause the fire the blimps skin was treated with a chemical that we now use as rocket propellent. thats why it burned as it did if it had been the hydrgen the blimp would have blown up and not burn

    • yeah but......

They did tests on smaller scale models, and they were able to prove that hydrogen did play a major part in the way the zeppelin went down. Sad day in history. makes you wonder how air travel would be today if America had given up the helium. They did have a good reason not to, but just think.

  • The Death toll....

was 35 passengers and crew members. They never did find out why it caught fire.

    • Sure they did.

There's a whole documentary on how it went up. Turns out that the German engineers coated the outside with what amounted to rocket fuel. It was just waiting for the tiniest bit of static spark, which happened when they dropped the lines to the ground.

    • I have just read that

the Hindenburg was late to arrive at the crowning ceremony of king George VI of England. Therefore the captain made a too short turn, during stormy weather (which caused static energy). The forces caused by the short turn made one of the sixteen balloons with hydrogen burst. For the rest: see jtt1337's story.
