It IS based on a true story..
The battle of Thermopylae where king Leonidas led the 300 Spartans against the invading Persians led be Xerxes... Do your homework prior to posting something. Of course the film is not 100% historicaly accurate however it is based on a true story. There even is a monument (a statue) in memory of this battle right in the outskirts of modern Thermopylae. The number of the Persians is somewhere between 250.000 - 1.000.000 based on descriptions of the famous greek historian Herodote. The Spartans were indeed 300 and they were said to be direct descendants of Hercules.
