Can one just buy the raw Zinc Metal and Sodium Hydroxide. I tried it with a galvanized nail and Drano and it didn't work.

You can find zinc and sodium hydroxide on ebay for good prices or any chemical supply shop.

Also...check the local hardware store for drain cleaners that contain lye or NaOH (both are sodium hydroxide).
Another source of zinc is to sacrifice a penny using a torch until a glob of metal drops from it...that glob is about 95% zinc and can be ground down after it cools for better results.
Electrolysis of zinc to the penny also works great 8o)8503036 - 1

technically it's only illegal to alter or destroy paper money, because paper dollars are backed by the gold reserve. coins are technically bought by the banks and you buy them from the banks in exchange for dollars.

sorry but paper dollars are not backed by the gold reserve, if you read a dollar it says "this is legal tender" which means that the actual paper is worth that amount plus the tax, we merely borrow the dollars from the federal reserve bank, so because they are not ours we cant destroy them... yeah that sounds about right.
