Jail House Trick
This is what you do in Jail with a plastic bottle and a lighter. If you just heat the part of the bottle that contains liquid it wont melt.

lf you DID get the water to 100 degrees C it would make a very high pressure in the bottle. If the bottle didnt explode (showering people with scalding water) then it would boil when you relesase the cap (and the pressure) again spraying boiling liquid around.

paraphrase: dont leave it on too long/let kids do it

apart from that, nice technique! I imagine the water keeps the plastic below its melting point by convection currents inside the bottle

  The water will begin evaporate and start building pressure inside the bottle. In contact with air, the water will go all over the place. It's like shaking a coke bottle.

His reason the plastic on the bottel doesnt melt is WRONG!!

ok people, the real reason is because...

Waters Boiling point is a lower Tempeture then plastics metling point.
there for if the waters is contiunasly touching the plastic in a confined area such as a bottle so it wont evaperate the plastic will never exceep the max temp of water (Which plastics melting point is much higher!)

It's not healthy
to heat water in a plastic bottle. Gross chemicals from the plastic migrate into the water.
