They never got the $2 back, so it doesn't enter into the equation - just the $3 (room=$25 $3 = $28, not $27). Nothing really amazing about that.

If you were to ask the guys who got the dollar back, how much they spent out of thier pocket they would say $9, and you would say the same thing. so 3 x $9 = $27 and in real life the bellhop only kept $2. so that makes it $29

i think what makes us confused is the detail that there were 3 guys who checked in and paid 10 dollars each for a 30 dollar motel room. but if we put it aside... just take note: the room costs 25 dollars, not 30 dollars (accdg to the manager)... so the bell hop is told to return 5 dollars... but he pockets 2 dollars because he says it's messy to divide 5 dollars among 3 people, and instead gives them a dollar each! that's the catch man... the shrewd bell hop made the 3 guys pay 28 dollars for a 25 dollar motel room! cool...

You cant take the 3 men individually you will have to take them as one and then you will get the answer within second. 3 men paid $30 the man took $25 for the room. $2 for himself and gave $3 back to the 3 men. Anybody remember order of operations from math class? You can't arbitrarily choose what order you do your math in. His math is flawed in the "finale".

Thats a total room cost of $27.oo (divide it 3 way and each man has payed $9.00 ea.) That left $1.00 ea. for each of the three men. Which accounts for the whole original $30.00

the $2 in the bellhop's pocket shouldn't get added to $27, it should get subtracted, because it's part of the $5 given back. the story-teller's misleading statements make this one unsolvable

Here's the fault in the logic. He asks what happened to the extra dollar missing from the $30, but the number 30 is no longer a part of the equation when when the amount they paid now adds up to $27. Simple.

the original mistake is not taking the bellhops honesty into the question. There was no mistake, he pocketed 5 dollars of the original 30, so now he has 5+2=7, the men have a dollar each so 3+7=10, plus the 25 dollars for the room makes 35$ and only 30 dollars being initially exchanged so there is a dicrepency of 5$ and the hotels refund of 5$ means the hotel is down $10 so now we have the current finacial statues of the parties involved. the bellhop is +7, the guests are +3 and the hotel are +15 which all adds up to $25. so where is the 5$

so let's say the shopkeeper now has 30 dollars, he takes away 5, and now he has 25.
3 of those 5 dollars, goes to the men, and now there's 28 dollars, we know where are. The last two dollars he kept, so he ends up with 25 2 = 27, and the last three, the men have.

This is one of those pretentious things that some "math" guys like to do. It's very simple to figure out, but the condescending way he's talking thru the whole thing turns my stomach...

This is about persuasion, a car salesman told me this and some other ways of manipulating thinking...imagine that. the basic trick to this is that you are trying to get it all to add up to 30 dollars. because we are taught to add things up. The true anwer is -- that if you SUBTRACT the 2 dollars from the 27 which the men paid, you will get 25, which is what they paid for the room.

The problem people are making here is NOT following the money. Yes, the guys get $1 dollar each back. So in effect they did pay $9 dollars each. But they DO NOT HAVE nine dollars each, because they already paid $10 each. The one holding the bulk of the money is the HOTEL and NOT the men. The men have $1 dollar each = $3 dollars, the bellboy has $2 dollars, and the Hotel has $25 dollars.

One doesn't add the 2 the bellboy kept, one subtracts it. Just as you subtracted the 3 the renters got back from 30 to get 27, you subtract the 2 from 27 to get 25 which is what the room costs.

See it's a trick. The bellhop keeping the $2 means that it is part of the cost of the room. It shouldn't be added to the $9 x 3 = $27. Because the $2 is included in the 27 dollars ie: $25+$2 = $27. Instead you should add $3 to $27 equaling $30, because this is the amount that isn't actually part of the cost!

Why does your equation ADD the two dollars two the twenty-seven that the men paid? The two dollars SUBTRACTED from the twenty-seven equals the net price of the room. There's no reason to try and add-up any numbers to equal thirty because that is not the NET amount paid by the men. The men paid 3 X 9 each or $27. Twenty five went to the hotelier and two to the bell-hop. End of story.

It is quite simple, the problem is how it is told. You can't logically say they spent $27 total and then add the $2. They spent $27 and each one got a $1 back. Play it out with 30 pennies on your table and you will see the "magic" is in the wording and that there is no missing $1.

The answer on the webpage doesn't account for the manner in which it's described in the video, it uses simple math. Clearly there is no extra dollar, however 9X3=27 plus 2 =29. ?? That line of math doesn't equate.

the answer is that when u multiply the answer comes out differently because it is multyplying by an odd number and to the idiot that think you multyply by 9.33 where the f**k did u go to school 10-1=9 dumb f**k
